"I've been waiting... though for whom, I don't know."
―Rin Miroku[src]

Rin Miroku was the youngest daughter of the Miroku Family. Born with the nagging feeling that she was waiting for someone important, the young girl occasionally helped her father and mother with their dry goods business while awaiting that someone's return. She was Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche's reincarnation.

Early LifeEdit

"Not just today either. Yesterday, the day before that, and even long before that—since the time I was born."
―Rin regarding her feeling of waiting[src]

Rin was born into the Miroku Family sometime during the EC 820s. Raised by her parents Kai and Mei alongside her elder sister Miku, Rin grew up feeling that she was waiting for someone, although she didn't know who. Eventually, she began helping with the family dry goods business. When a great fire struck Enbizaka in EC 838, she and her mother and sister remained at home while the fire ravaged the main town on the other side of the river; shortly after, the family discovered the back of Kai's left hand was severely burned.[1] She later learned that her sister started dating Kiji Yarera of the Yarera-Zusco Firm.[2]

"Are you waiting for someone too, Onee-san?"
"... Why would you think that?"
"Somehow, I get that feeling from your face."
―Rin and Kayo Sudou[src]

In early EC 842, Rin was left with watching the store due to the rest of her family going out. Seeing a woman approach, she questioned if she was alright. Bluntly replying that her parents weren't home and that her sister was on a date, Rin introduced herself. She then explained that she was housesitting that day, and that she couldn't take any work requests nor sell any kimono since she didn't know the pricing. Asked if she was waiting for her family, Rin confirmed the fact.

She then stated that she wasn't just waiting for her family, explaining her strange feeling she had since birth. Hearing the woman agree with her sentiment, Rin saw her lonely expression and asked if the woman was waiting for someone herself. When the woman inquired why she would think that, the young girl admitted it the feeling her face gave her. Seeing the woman turn away, Rin apologized for being rude before being told that the people she was waiting for were never coming back; the woman left immediately after.[3]

Later that year, Rin began watching her mother after she became sick. She later welcomed her father home. Asked how Mei was doing, Rin explained that she was still sleeping and that she had gotten better. Asked where Miku was, Rin guessed she was still at Kiji's house. Hearing her father rant about Kiji being a despicable foreigner and dating Miku despite his disapproval, Rin bluntly told him not to yell at her about it. She then saw her father go to the back of the shop.[4]

Enbizaka Murderer ScandalEdit

After learning her mother was found brutally murdered in spring of that year, the family grieved their loss. When the girl learned Miku had been murdered in a similar fashion a few months later, Rin grieved her sister's death as well, crying constantly over the next few days.[5] Later on, she went to her father's hometown in Amayomi to recover, making a lot of new friends in the chilly region. At some point, the girl acquired one of the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia and, contracting with the Demon of Pride, later dreamed of her past life as Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche and that Kayo Sudou would murder her on the Onigashima shoreline.

Sometime after, she returned home for about a week and went out with Kai. While browsing the hairpin shop, Kai asked if she liked the hairpin he was holding and she halfheartedly agreed. She then picked a golden hairpin for herself. When asked whether she would wear it or have it packaged, Rin thought about it before deciding to wear it. At Oyuka's suggestion she'd put it on as her "big sister", Rin thanked the "old woman". Met with silence, Rin soon realized her blunder and corrected herself, rushing over to the shopkeeper.

Sitting in front of a mirror while the woman worked with her hair, the girl heard Kai ask about her time in Amayomi and Rin related her fun experience. Her father lamented that she'd be leaving in about a week before promising to join her by spring-time the following year; Rin agreed she'd wait for him. Once Oyuka finished, Rin looked at her reflection, entranced by her new appearance. She then asked Kai and he confirmed it looked nice, adding that her kimono didn't suit it and that he'd pick out a new one for her once they returned home. Surprised, the girl giggled with a beautiful smile before heading home with her father, hand-in-hand.

Rin confronts Kayo at the beach

That night, the girl went to the beach and waited until Kayo arrived later that evening. Greeting the woman, the tailor questioned how she knew her and Rin pointed out that she introduced herself. Hearing Kayo claim they've never met before, Rin brushed off the woman's peculiar behavior and admitted she could've also heard her name from her mother, sister, or even a dream. After revealing the vision she had in her sleep, Rin asked if Kayo believed in previous lives before revealing the hand mirror she owned and its similarity to the Twin Blades of Levianta the tailor possessed.

After revealing the memories she reawakened and that she knew who she was waiting for, the girl heard Kayo mock her past life as a childish fantasy and said she didn't care what she thought. Declaring she wouldn't die until she finally reunited with Allen, the girl said she'd kill the tailor instead. Raising the mirror above her head, Rin heard Kayo apologize and told her to shut up before yelling for the Demon of Pride to give her the power to defeat the tailor.

As she realized there was no response, Kayo repeatedly sliced up the girl and she collapsed. When Kayo wished her happiness in the next life, Rin scoffed at her murderer's belated kindness as the tailor took her hairpin. She then lamented her failure to stay alive and apologized to Allen for not being able to wait until he came for her. Finally succumbing to her wounds, Rin died.[6]

In the days following her death, Rin's body was never found and her disappearance was investigated in connection to her mother and sister's murders. Kai later fled the town before being confronted by Kayo while wearing all three women's articles of clothing and subsequently murdering him shortly before her arrest.[7] When asked why she had murdered the women while on trial, Kayo claimed it was because they were in an affair with her husband. She was soon after convicted and executed for her crimes.[8] When Gakusha asked about Kayo's gibbeted head, the monk was told about her ghastly murder of Rin and the other Mirokus.[9]

Personality and TraitsEdit

Rin was a kind but sharp-tongued girl. While maintaining a polite demeanor, especially with strangers, she was also quite blunt, giving facts in a straightforward manner and usually speaking her mind.[10] Aside from this, Rin had a nagging feeling she was waiting for someone, though unaware who that someone was for her entire life. As a result, she often thought about that person hoping to understand her strange feeling.[11] After losing both her mother and sister, Rin fell into a mild depression and became significantly less responsive, though eventually cheering up a little.[12]

While she loved her family deeply, Rin was unwilling to tolerate Kai's anger at her for her elder sister's choices.[13] Having been especially close to Miku, she took her sister's death particularly hard, ultimately deciding to take a vacation and get away from it all for her emotional scars to heal. However, she still enjoyed being doted on by her father and greatly appreciated the golden hairpin he bought for her. After regaining her memories as Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche, Rin also treasured her past life's relationship with Allen Avadonia and became determined to remain alive until she met the boy no matter the cost.[14]

Skills and AbilitiesEdit

Rin was trustworthy enough to watch over her family's shop alone. She was also decent at business, helping out with her family's livelihood. However, she had limited knowledge of the business' systems, not knowing the pricing of their kimono.[15] After contracting with the Demon of Pride, Rin was able to heal from any injury unless dealt by another contractor or similar demonically-fueled attack.[16]
