"The boasted diva of Lucifenia, Rin Chan, appears."
―Bruno Marlon[src]

Rin Chan was a diva living in Rolled in the Lucifenian Republic and a childhood friend of Lemy Abelard. Growing up in the local orphanage, Rin was adopted by Ton Corpa and trained to become a professional singer. After having her face changed by Seventh Magician, she became a sensation across Evillious until losing her singing voice. Soon caught in a scandal, she feared for her life before being rescued by Lemy.

HistoryEdit

Early LifeEdit

"Rin and I grew up in the same orphanage. We were friends."
―Lemy Abelard[src]

Rin was born in the Lucifenian Republic sometime during the EC 590s. Orphaned at a young age, the child grew up in the local orphanage in Rolled, becoming close friends with another orphan, Lemy. During their time at the orphanage, Rin learned to read picture books and sing; during lessons, her singing while the piano teacher played wowed everyone there. On December 26, EC 600, Senator Julia Abelard visited, putting her large bag with lots of Nativity Festival gifts before them. Telling them to pick their favorite, the children gathered around and each chose one. The next day, Lemy was adopted by Julia and left Rin and the orphanage.[1]

Soon after, she was adopted by the merchant Ton Corpa and worked as a servant in his local mansion. Later on, the man discovered her great singing talent and plotted to make her a professional singer for his profit. Going along with the idea Rin listened to Ton say her face was too plain to appear onstage. Afterward, the businessman took her to a fortune teller's store in Rollam, relating the story that "Seventh Magician" could change anyone's face with a sword inhabited by a demon.

Once Seventh Magician agreed and changed Rin's face with the sword, she noticed her blonde-hair, clear-skinned face greatly resemble Lemy's visage. Surprised, the girl learned that the face Ton selected was taken from a portrait of Princess Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche, the businessman claiming it had become his favorite. Afterward, Ton set himself up as the girl's manager for her upcoming career.[2]

Debut into FameEdit

"I heard her singing voice lots. There's no mistaking it. There's absolutely no doubt that's Rin... But her face is super different."
―Lemy[src]

Rin debuts at Milanais Theater

A few days after the completion of Milanais Theater in EC 606, the excited Rin was brought there to perform for her new career's debut. After one of Ton's other child performers was suddenly mauled by a lion backstage, the singer was rushed to stand-in for the circus performance's opening act. Once the manager quickly explained the sudden change in plans, Rin took the stage and bowed, ignoring the booing from the audience. As she began singing a cappella, the crowd quieted down until she finished. Met with applause and demands for an encore, Rin sang another song, continuing her performance until the audience was satisfied.[3]

Afterward, Rin Chan became a sensation as a child prodigy, performing all over the continent. Overjoyed by her new beautiful face and evergrowing fame, the diva continued working endlessly as her manager ordered. Gradually suffering under the stress of constantly performing, the child eventually became unable to sing. Afterward, Ton brought in a Netsuma girl named Chansaux to become her replacement before they discovered Seventh Magician closed shop therefore couldn't changed the Netsuma's discriminated appearance. Their manager then had Rin continue publicly performing while secretly lip-syncing to Chansaux.[4]

After Rin was scheduled to sing at President Julia Abelard's inauguration party at the Lucifenian Palace on August 18 of EC 609, the girl attended the event in the Hall of Mirrors. Coming onstage, she thanked her audience for inviting her to the beautiful palace and announced her song to celebrate the inauguration of the new president. As the orchestra began, Rin Chan began lip-syncing as Chansaux sang three songs; when she had finished she smiled at the audience before lip-syncing her last song for the night.[5] During this time, she noticed her childhood friend Lemy nearby speaking to a blue-haired man.

After departing, Rin Chan left Lucifenia to perform at a concert in Asmodean;[6] following their performance there, Rin traveled to Elphegort and arrived at Aceid's Southern District on September 1, greeted by her many fans.[7] On September 10, Rin performed at the Central Theater and lip-synced 39 of her songs; met with thunderous applause in the overcrowded theater, she gave two of her songs an encore. In the wake of the tipster N A leaking that she had lip-synced her songs,[8] Rin Chan returned with Ton to his mansion and later declined an interview with the Schuburg Newspaper regarding the allegations.[9]

RescueEdit

"But... That's not all, Mr. Ton's gonna kill me too. I heard him talking with someone, saying he "should find someone new"."
―Rin[src]

On October 6, Rin Chan learned that Ton had killed Chansaux in the basement to remove evidence of her lip-syncing, overhearing that he was planning to kill and replace her as well. Soon after he locked her in her room, Rin cried over her fate before hearing someone knock on her door. The girl wondered if it was Ton before hearing Lemy's voice; surprised, the girl questioned what he was doing; the boy then called to her to open the door and she explained it was locked.

Once Lemy asked who had the key, Rin Chan explained that Ton always carried it on him. As Lemy opened up the door regardless, Rin looked at him in wonder; when Lemy remarked on how long they'd been separated, she reminded him that he'd seen her before at the Lucifenian Palace and explained how she'd seen him there. When the other child tried to apologize for not listening to her songs, she brushed it off as it wasn't her singing anyway. The former diva then begged her friend to take her away or she would be killed, explaining how Chansaux had already been killed.

Lemy then grabbed Rin's hand and made for an escape, only for the two to run into Ton on the way out. Crying out, Rin watched her manager prepare to kill her and Lemy, only for Lemy to overpower and slaughter the man with a smile on his face. Pale, Rin stammered out how he'd just killed a person and continued that, despite Ton being a bad person, it hadn't been necessary to do that. As her friend insisted he hadn't meant to, Rin exclaimed he was lying and cited the smile on his face as she trembled. When Lemy reached for her, she slapped his hand away and called him a murderer.

Forced out of the house instead, Rin was made to accompany Lemy to a carriage passing by the estate and rode with him on the way to Toragay. After a few hours, Rin finally regained her composure and apologized to him for lashing out when he'd been trying to help her. As Lemy brushed it off as not being necessary, she asked him what they'd do now and heard that he planned to go to his aunt's in Calgaround, although not before stopping to rest.

Once they arrived at an inn in Aceid, Lemy gave Rin Chan the sleeves of his outfit to use as a hood and, thus disguised, rented a room with Lemy to rest in for the night. She then spent time telling Lemy everything that had happened to her; explaining how Seventh Magician had changed her face to look like Riliane's, she proposed the possibility that Lemy was descended from Lucifenian royal blood, only for her friend to dismiss the idea.[10]

Flight to CalgaroundEdit

"Fifth Pierrot has already returned home. However, I have the girl he brought here underground."
―Mayrana Blossom[src]

That evening, Rin changed into plain clothes and, with Lemy, rode to one of the checkpoints on the way to Calgaround. Walking the rest of the way to the city, she noticed how all the buildings were a vibrant red and commented on the eeriness of the town, listening as Lemy explained it was a way for its residents to show reverence for their "lady." The two finally entered and Rin watched as Lemy was greeted by his aunt Mayrana and his mother, Julia Abelard.[11] After Lemy begged his mother to help Rin, she was allowed into Mayrana's custody and, after the boy left with his mother,[12] tied with rope and locked in the basement.

On October 21, Elluka Clockworker and Gumillia came and freed the girl from within the basement and Rin thanked the pink-haired mage. When Gumillia stated that they'd take her back to Rolled, Rin grew scared and shook her head. Asking if she could be taken anywhere else, Rin admitted that her lip-syncing would be discovered if she returned. While being taken upstairs, Elluka was attacked by Gatt Coulomb and Rin quickly cowered in the corner.[13] After the swordsman retreated, Rin and Gumillia rushed to the coachman outside with Elluka's body and rushed her to Aceid.[14]

WhistleblowerEdit

"Impossible! You can't just change a person's face so easily!"
"Really now?—  I actually found that out in Elphegort. It was a woman who Yuzette... No, "Seventh Magician" changed her face. Upon her request, I won't give out her name, but she promised to testify in court proper if necessary."
―Bruno Marlon and Ayn Anchor[src]

Shortly after returning to Aceid, Rin was taken in by Gatt and disappeared from the public eye again, living with Phoebe Aymieux's younger sister.[15] In the latter half of May of EC 610, Rin was found by Justea investigator Ayn Anchor. When the officer questioned her in relation to the criminal organization Père Noël, Rin related everything she knew about Seventh Magician and her face-changing ability. During the interrogation, the diva agreed to testify in court if necessary but otherwise remain anonymous for her own protection.[16]

Taken into protective custody by the World Police, Rin continued helping with their investigation into Père Noël as they cracked down on the organization while avoiding details regarding Lemy and his mother's involvement. When she was questioned about the assassin Fifth Pierrot's true identity, Rin claimed she couldn't recognize her kidnapper's face under all the makeup.[17] After Fifth Pierrot was allegedly killed and Père Noël later fell apart at the end of January of EC 611, Rin resumed her singing career. On February 15, she sang an open concert in Milanais Square before a large crowd.[18]

Personality and TraitsEdit

"At first, I was happy. I got a more beautiful face than before and became more and more famous—  But, it gradually became painful."
―Rin[src]

Rin Chan was a good-natured and ambitious young girl. Despite her poor background and later abuse, she showed a kind disposition to everyone.[19] This also extended to Rin's body language, maintaining a calm and polite demeanor in most situations.[20] She also thought killing was immoral and was terrified when faced with it. Due to her love for singing, Rin was initially overjoyed at the chance to become a famous diva, willing to even change her face, and was pleased with the attention. However, her constant abuse under Ton took a toll on the child and she became miserable being essentially enslaved to her manager.[21]

Rin considered Lemy a very dear friend, having grown up with him in the Rolled orphanage and often spending time with the child.[22] Even after the two were adopted, Rin continued to value their friendship and was glad Lemy came to rescue her from certain death. Though at first frightened by the boy for happily murdering Ton, Rin soon felt guilty for her reaction toward her rescuer and opened up to him again. She also appeared to share a friendly relationship with Chansaux and became hysterical following her death.[23]

Despite her association with the criminal underworld, Rin was still willing to help the authorities find and bring to justice the criminals involved in Lemy's organization,[24] though remaining protective of anything directly harmful to Lemy or his family.[25] Although originally having a pretty pale, freckled face with black hair, Rin took a liking to the clear-skinned, blonde-haired face shared with Princess Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche that she gained via the Venom Sword, considering the royal appearance both beautiful and preferable.[26]

Skills and AbilitiesEdit

"Rin's voice today is... certainly good and the voice is very similar. But... it isn't her voice."
―Lemy[src]

Rin Chan was a talented prodigy in singing, with a voice beautiful enough to soothe an irate crowd. Possessing an otherwise average intelligence, the girl learned to sing amazingly from very early on. Despite her youth and inexperience, she was particularly skilled in opera and was able to project her voice over a wide audience.[27] Although having an impressive endurance, Rin's singing voice wasn't without limit and still suffered stress under constant use. Due to her abusive career under Ton, the girl's singing voice eventually gave out entirely,[28] though she eventually regained her singing ability after her extensive break from her career.[29]

Although not originally possessing a stage-worthy presence, Rin Chan gained the royal visage of Princess Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche after her face was changed with the Venom Sword, giving her the standing and beauty to be a very popular diva. She was also very capable on-stage and could lip-sync flawlessly.[30]

Character ConnectionsEdit

Lemy Abelard: Rin's childhood friend. Rin became good friends with Lemy over the course of their time in the orphanage and had a close relationship with the boy. Although initially frightened by his great capacity for killing someone, she nonetheless appreciated what he had done for her and refused to give him away to the police.

Ton Corpa: Rin's manager. Although initially content to work for Ton and happy to start on a career as a diva, Ton's abuse, pushing her to sing constantly, caused her great anxiety and stressed her to the point of being unable to sing. Learning of her manager's more murderous nature, she feared the merchant; despite this, Rin was horrified by Ton's death.

Chansaux: Rin's backup singer. Rin got to become professional acquaintances with Chansaux after the latter helped her with her concerts by providing her vocals. After the Netsuma's murder, Rin became terrified for her own life at Ton's hands.

TrivaEdit

Conceptualization and OriginEdit

  • Rin's name is taken from her representative Vocaloid, Kagamine Rin.
  • Her surname is possibly derived from the Japanese suffix -chan, which is added to the end of someone's name, usually a small child or friend.

CuriositiesEdit

  • Humorously, Rin is quoted as exclaiming "Now, kneel to me" during her performance in Aceid, likely a reference to Princess Riliane whom she shared her new face with.
