"...How trivial."
―Marie Annette[src]

Marie Annette, later known as the Demon of Pride, was an earthling from the Second Period and later one of the Demons of Sin. As part of the team on the Climb One who intended to repopulate a new planet with human beings, Marie became involved in the creation of the Third Period before being trapped on the ship and later reincarnating as a demon.

History[]

Early History[]

Born in the Second Period, Marie Annette became a young historian.[1] As the Second Period began to collapse due to HERs contaminating the world, she and 71 other scientists boarded one of several spaceships intended to travel to inhabitable planets and repopulate them, theirs under the name Climb One. As they lost contact with all their fellow spaceships, the crew of the Climb One realized they were the last inhabitants of Earth and decided to create a new species in the image of earthlings.

After finding a new planet to inhabit, they set about constructing the new world and species, designing their societal development to mirror that of earthlings' in a shorter time span. During this process Seth Twiright, an HER who had secretly boarded the Climb One, instigated the deaths of 62 of the crew members and contaminated the new species to have a possibility of developing HER Syndrome. The remaining crew, including Marie, proposed they reincarnate as gods into the world to guide the humans, unaware that they themselves were HERs.

When their colleagues Held Yggdra and Luna Hazuki disagreed, Marie joined the ensuing fight and was killed along with everyone else when it caused the Climb One to crash, leaving behind only her spirit data. Marie and her colleagues remained trapped in the Climb One for some time while the new species of humans began building their societies; eventually, the humans of Magic Kingdom Levianta discovered the Climb One and established it as a holy relic called the "Sin" ark.[2]

Mantle of Pride[]

During the Levianta Catastrophe, Marie escaped the ark along with her fellow earthlings. She was thus drawn to Held's Forest, becoming a rat forest spirit and losing her memories. As time went on, she became dissatisfied with life in the forest and sought a way out. After Hänsel and Gretel killed their foster parents in EC 014, she gathered at the Moonlit house with Gilles, Vlad, Lich, Rahab, and Salem. There, they reunited with Seth and were offered vessels to inhabit as demons. Marie accepted the offer,[3] and was thus reincarnated by Hänsel and Gretel's Re_birthday.[4] Becoming the "Demon of Pride", Marie inhabited a mirror.[5] Afterwards, the demons and their vessels of sin were scattered across the world,[6] armed with the knowledge of the sun god's rules for demons.[7]

Twiright Prank[]

Sometime during the EC 480s, Abyss I.R. split the demon's mirror into four smaller mirrors, sharing the vessel fragments with Queen Prim Marlon.[8] In late December of EC 491, the Demon of Gluttony was transplanted into one of the mirrors and planted in the northwestern coast of Lucifenia.[9] The mirror was later sealed by Elluka Clockworker and the demon was recalled from the vessel fragment.[10]

Story of Evil[]

After Queen Anne's death in EC 499, Ney Phutapie gave another mirror to Princess Riliane and the Demon of Pride was transplanted to her.[8] With the demon deeply rooting itself in her soul, Riliane's arrogance magnified, turning her into a cruel tyrant during her terrible reign. By the time Riliane had escaped to the Held Monastery during the Lucifenian Revolution in EC 500, the Demon had left her body.[11]

Later that year, Abyss I.R. transplanted the Demon of Lust to another mirror. Queen Dowager Prim then had the Demon of Pride possess King Kyle from the mirror he had.[8] As time progressed, the demon rooted itself deeply into Kyle's soul and grew bored of his prolonged ambitions to unite Evillious, mocking him aloud.[12] The next night, Kyle's mirror was stolen by Gumillia and Yukina Freezis

The demon then called out to Kyle as he searched for it; once Kyle took it back from the girls outside the palace, the demon had him undergo a demonic transformation, attacking Gumillia before flying off into the night sky.[13] When the transformed Kyle attacked Yukina, Germaine and Gumillia to the Millennium Tree Forest two weeks later, the Demon of Pride was exorcised from Kyle and two of the mirrors were successfully sealed by Gumillia.[14] Later that year, all four of the mirrors were sealed by Elluka and Gumillia shortly before Abyss I.R. took the fragments and removed the seals.[8]

Enbizaka Murderer Scandal[]

At some point, one of the demons' mirrors ended up in Jakoku's Amayomi region; as the mirror was discovered by Rin Miroku, who was a reincarnation of Riliane, the demon forged a contract with the girl. Invoked by Rin during her confrontation with Kayo Sudou, the demon was unable to respond, having lost most of its power.[15]

Dark Star Scandal[]

After Gallerian Marlon began collecting each of the mirrors in the early EC 980s, he stored two of them in his home; while there, the Demon of Pride taunted the Clockworker's Doll.[16] After all four mirrors were collected by Gallerian the demon's vessel fragments were chained together. Later on, Ma absorbed the demon into her soul, only to be expelled when Ma was killed.[17]

World's End[]

Following the destruction of the Third Period in EC 999, the Demon of Pride regained her memories as Marie. The demons were then approached by the sun god, who tasked each of them with helping Allen Avadonia meet one of their previous contractors, the Demon of Pride's being Princess Riliane.

With Allen ignoring Sickle's orders,[18] Marie instead gathered with the other demons in Marlon, staying there with Michaela. She later appeared before Clarith and Riliane after they fled the Tasan Party soldiers assaulting the palace, as Riliane was threatening to go back to save Kyle from the soldiers.

After Marie tried and failed to convince Riliane to forge a contract with her, she reassured the girl by sharing Rahab's theory that the Tasan Party was only hunting the contractors most "compatible" with their demon. She thus convinced Riliane to go to Michaela so she and the other demons could combine powers to stop the "Sleep Princess", and they set out with Clarith.[19] Later on during Allen and Nemesis' fight with Ma, Marie flew up to Allen, bringing along a Very Amazing Green Onion and allowing Gumillia to communicate with him.[20]

Legacy[]

A heavily stylized account of Marie's participation in the Third Period's creation was noted in the Levin Bible, with Marie being one of the six "god kin" who swore allegiance to Levia-Behemo against the "Sun God".[21] Marie's actions as the Demon of Pride sparked chaos and tragedy throughout the history of the Third Period.

In the Fourth Period, there existed a paper demon copy of Marie in her demon form. [22] This demon was housed within the archive of Tokitou Masaki and seemed to retain some of the powers (albeit weaker) and memories of the original. [23]

Personality and Traits[]

"Good grief! –In the first place, was there even any need to take you here at all!?"
"What do you mean?"
"All others aside, weren’t you personally involved with what happened with Riliane!? You would know all of it already even if you didn’t go to meet her now…More than anyone else, if I’m being untactful."
―Marie complaining to Allen[src]

Acting like a HER, Marie was a morally corruptible girl. During the creation of the Third Period, she and her colleagues became willing to kill in order to achieve their objectives, and as a demon of sin Marie became rampaging, apathetic, and haughty, having no goals but to sow chaos in the Third Period. Fitting with her immaturity, she displayed an impatient and bratty nature and expressed desire to live opulently.

Skills and Abilities[]

As one of the bright minds from the Second Period, Marie had a basic knowledge of all of the advanced technology used by earthlings. As the youngest member on the Climb One, Marie was a precocious child and extremely intelligent in her field as a historian.

As a Demon of Sin, the Demon of Pride was able to possess those who wielded its vessel, influencing their personality and actions, fueling their host's arrogance and vanity and expelling all doubts. If a contract was forged between an individual and the Demon, the Demon's host would have access to powers provided by the Demon. The Demon could also communicate with their host through telepathy. Because of its unique vessel, the Demon of Pride could also move between its mirrors and thus reach more potential hosts across the region or escape if one mirror had been sealed.

Among the host's powers were undergoing a physical transformation; those made to transform by the Demon of Pride would have their skin turn black and grow long, sharp claws and teeth, as well as six feathered wings. The Demon of Pride's transformation was the most powerful of all the demons; however, unlike the other Demons of Sin, the transformation did not provide its host with any other unique abilities. Due to its interactions with Held and Michaela, the Demon's physical manifestation was smaller in size than those of the other Demons, causing it to be slower and have less endurance.

Although inhabiting the body of its host while possessing them, the Demon of Pride's true essence remained in the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia. Because of this, the Demon's powers could be inhibited by a sealing spell;[11] similarly, the demon was forced to abide by the "rules" put in place by Sickle until the end of the Third Period.[7]

Character Connections[]

Luna Hazuki: A fellow earthling. Although originally fine with working with Hazuki as a colleague, Marie became resentful of her philosophy to let the humans work things out for themselves and caused chaos in the Third Period because of this.

Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche: One of the demon's hosts. Although forced to possess Riliane, the Demon of Pride appeared satisfied with the princess' tyrannical behavior and bloodthirsty rule compared to the likes of Kyle.

Kyle Marlon: One of the demon's hosts. Initially forced to possess him, the Demon of Pride found Kyle to be boring in his restraint and attention to politics and often berated the king for this. Nonetheless, the Demon gradually forced the king to rely more and more on its power by soothing his insecurities, using him for its own ends.

Trivia[]

Conceptualization and Origins[]

  • According to Ma, the Demon had lost most of its power by the time it contracted with Rin Miroku;[15] the Seven Crimes and Punishments short story, the Demon blames its diminutive form on Held and Michaela.
  • The name Marie Annette is also a pun on "marionette".
