"That disgusting foreigner…I expressly forbid you from ever interacting with that brute!"
―Kai Miroku[src]

Kai Miroku was a cloth seller in Jakoku and the head of the Miroku Family. Embittered towards foreigners, the man joined the Crimson Robed Masses. He inadvertently caused the Great Fire of Enbizaka, and later witnessed the murder of his entire family by one of its survivors.

History[]

Early Life[]

Kai was born sometime during the EC 800s in a town in Amayomi, Jakoku. When he was ten years old, Kai's mother committed suicide, rumored to be a result of her having been gang-raped by foreigners. As a result, Kai became deeply embittered towards foreigners, despite having mixed ancestry himself. Sometime after, he joined a faction of the extremist Crimson Robed Masses that were tolerant of foreign-blooded Jakokuese.[1] Kai later met and entered a relationship with Mei, eventually marrying her.

Siring two children, Miku and Rin, Kai sold dry goods at a local clothing shop in Enbizaka, working at the shop and Mei running errands outside it. Eventually, the man began doing business with Freezis Foundation employee Perrié Cutie Marlon.[2]

Neighborhood Tragedy[]

"Judging from where the flames first started, the arsonist’s goal was the foreign trading houses. So it stands to reason that the culprit was someone who hated foreigners."
―Kiji speculating about Kai[src]

In December of EC 838, Kai attempted to set fire to the Freezis trade house, only to be startled by Gakuga Sudou and accidentally set fire to a bush, which spread toward the surrounding buildings. Fleeing, Kai was pursued by Gakuga until he reached Mount Inasa.[3] He later returned home, revealing he was burned on the back of his left hand.[4] Following the fire, Kai discovered that Miku was dating Yarera-Zusco Firm's manager Kiji Yarera, to his disgust.[5]

Business Matters[]

After Mei became ill with a cold, Kai met with Perrié himself to receive payment for the goods she ordered. While they met, he explained Mei's current condition; after he received her payment, Kai heard Perrié explain that there was currently a boom for kimono in Maistia and the woman expressed her frustrations with Jakoku's isolationist policy that prevented her from getting more. As Kai brought up the Crimson Robed Masses that despised foreign influence, he heard the woman proclaim she wasn't afraid.

With Perrié later bringing up Kayo Sudou, Kai explained to her that he hadn't met the woman due to a generational feud between their families. He then prepared to depart, learning that Perrié intended to go out and hunt mermaids out of a belief that eating a mermaid gave one immortality. As she rushed off with a harpoon, Kai returned home and met with Rin, who explained Mei's condition had improved. After learning that Miku was likely at Kiji's house, Kai began ranting about his disapproval of Kiji; once Rin told him to stop, Kai went to the back of the shop.[2]

Kai discusses the fire with Mei

Long after Mei had recovered, Kai took a walk with her and, when she began to fuss over his burns from the fire, tried to reassure her that he was fine and ended any protests otherwise. Mei then anxiously asked him why he had been out on the night of the fire, of all nights, and Kai lied that he had only wanted to admire the scenery.

As they discussed the fire, Kai noted Mei getting upset and suggested they return home, only for Mei to reveal she still had business with Perrié. The two then discussed Perrié's obsession with mermaids, and afterwards Kai apologized for making Mei deal with a foreigner, only for her to brush it off. He then bid his wife farewell and headed home.[4]

Enbizaka Murderer Scandal[]

The following day, Kai was informed by Constable Uibee Aoi about Mei's brutal murder. As the entire family grieved Mei's death, he later began managing the storefront while Miku handled the sales dealing outside, working hard to replace her mother. Later that year, he walked with her along Twin Mirror Bridge, where Miku revealed she was pregnant with Kiji's child. Enraged, Kai argued with her about it until she left to take another order.

The following day, Kai was visited by Uibee who, after speaking with him about how well Kai and his family had adapted to Mei's murder, revealed that Miku had been murdered the night before. Overcome, Kai collapsed and Uibee left soon after.[5] A few days later, Uibee visited again and Kai spoke with him about Rin's terrible mental state due to her sister's death, agreeing to the constable's suggestion to buy her gifts to cheer her up.

Uibee then questioned Kai about Miku's pregnancy and their public argument over it, which Kai reluctantly admitted to. He then listened as Uibee speculated that Miku had been out that night because she was unable to face her father following the fight. Gripped with remorse, Kai then listened to Uibee state that Kiji, who had gone to Elphegort to inform his parents of Miku's pregnancy, had returned that morning. Kiji suddenly entered the shop and Kai flew into a rage, cursing him and blaming him for Miku's death. Once Uibee pulled the two apart, Kai demanded Kiji leave the shop and watched as both he and Uibee departed.[5]

Later on, Kai agreed to have Rin live in his hometown of Amayomi to let her emotional scars heal while he continued to run the shop by himself, growing haggard over time. Sometime after, Rin returned home for about a week and went out with Kai. While browsing the hairpin shop, Kai bought a golden hairpin Rin picked out for herself and had Yuka Musubi help her put it on. While Yuka worked with Rin's hair, Kai chatted with her about her stay in Amayomi and lamented her short stay in Enbizaka, before asserting he'd be joining her by next spring. After Yuka finished, Kai admired his daughter's appearance and soon after headed home with her.[6]

Following Rin's mysterious disappearance, Kai fled the town and scaled Mount Inasa,[7] as some of Crimson Robed Masses made their headquarters there.[8] On the way, he became exhausted and sought to rest in an abandoned temple halfway up. While he rested, he was greeted by the tailor Kayo Sudou. As he made conversation with her, Kai quickly recognized she was wearing the clothing of his dead family and Kayo revealed she was their murderer; after she explained that she had learned the truth about him from a prophetic dream, Kayo murdered Kai and tore his body to pieces with her scissors.[7]

World's End[]

Following his death, Kai's soul was sent to the Heavenly Yard and remained there. In EC 999, he and the other souls were pulled back to the Third Period as the ground world merged with the Hellish Yard.[9] When all the souls of the Third Period started singing the Clockwork Lullaby to restrain Ma, Kai eventually joined in their singing.[10]

Legacy[]

Right after his death, Kiji and his cohorts were approached by Kayo covered in Kai's blood, learning of Kayo's true motive for killing the man despite her apparent insanity. Soon after, the tailor was tried for her crimes and claimed Kai's family were his mistresses and that he was her adulterous husband. Kayo was soon after found guilty and executed.[1]

Personality and Traits[]

"Even so…I don’t get it. Why did Miroku Kai hate foreigners?"
"His mother took her own life when he was ten years old. According to rumor, she was gang raped by foreigners or something like that….I’d wager that’s the reason."
―Kokutan and Kiji[src]

Kai was an outwardly good-natured but secretly prejudiced man. Kind and polite, he typically conducted himself with warmth, greeting customers and even strangers with a smile. As such, he had a good reputation with his neighbors as a trustworthy businessman and as a loving husband, caring greatly for his family. Despite his apparent kindness, Kai also had a temper, easily losing his patience with Miku once she revealed her pregnancy and quarreling with her about it in public. Kai also preferred to stay home and work while his wife went outside to handle errands.

Due to losing his mother at an early age, supposedly due to the abuse of foreigners, Kai harbored a deep resentment towards anyone without Jakokuese blood, believing them all to be scum and secretly enraged by their attempts to open up trade with his country. Because of his prejudice, he disapproved of Kiji and Miku's relationship and disapproved of his wife working with Perrié Cutie Marlon. Despite this hatred, Kai was willing to look past the mixed lineage of his own wife and their children.[3]

Skills and Abilities[]

Kai was a skilled draper, able to make products out of cloth and sell them as wares for his shop. He was also decent at business, managing his shop well enough to provide for himself and his family. Despite this skill, he relied on his wife and later Miku to run errands outside while he managed the storefront. Due to being a merchant, Kai was able to deal with customers as well as business partners in an amiable manner.[3]

Character Connections[]

Mei Miroku: Kai's wife and the mother of his two daughters. Kai loved Mei greatly as his wife, marrying her despite her mixed background and his own prejudices against foreigners, and treated her with great affection. After her death, Kai was devastated but nonetheless managed their business in her stead.

Miku Miroku: Kai's older daughter. Kai loved her as his daughter and often treated her with great affection, appreciative of how hard working she was. Nonetheless, Kai was physically overcome by Miku's death and emotional that he had quarreled with her right before it.

Rin Miroku: Kai's younger daughter. Kai loved the girl as his daughter and trusted her with pitching in for the family business. Although occasionally getting into quarrels with her over his own prejudices, Kai nonetheless cared for her, continuing to work despite his later devastation so that his last daughter wouldn't starve and giving her gifts to cheer her up.

Kayo Sudou: Kai's stalker and killer. Separated from the Sudou family by a feud, Kai never met Kayo despite his wife secretly acquiring her assistance and helping the woman to settle into Enbizaka following the fire. In spite of the supposed feud, Kai treated Kayo with a friendly greeting upon meeting her shortly before she murdered him.
