"...Well then, entertain me to your heart’s content."
―Gilles Derais[src]

Gilles Derais, later known as the Demon of Lust, was one of the survivors of the Second Period's destruction and Rahab Barisol's lover. After leaving the ruined world to its fate, the man continued charming women for his pleasure; despite being married. Joining Levia and Behemo Barisol in defying Luna Hazuki, he was sealed with his colleagues in Sin before escaping and reincarnating as a demon.

History[]

Early Life[]

Born in the Second Period, Gilles became a prominent astrophysicist,[1] and married the marine biologist Catherine, having a son with her.[2] As the Second Period began to collapse due to HERs contaminating the world, Gilles, Catherine and 70 other scientists boarded one of several spaceships intended to travel to inhabitable planets and repopulate them, theirs under the name Climb One.[3] Being a womanizer, on the ship Gilles flirted with all of the female scientists in the crew and took some of them on as lovers, including the psychiatrist Rahab Barisol. He also briefly attempted to earn the affection of Luna Hazuki, to no avail.[4]

As they lost contact with all their fellow spaceships, the crew of the Climb One realized they were the last inhabitants of Earth and decided to create a new species in the image of earthlings. After finding a new planet to inhabit, they set about constructing the new world and species. During this process Seth Twiright, an HER who had secretly boarded the Climb One, instigated the deaths of 62 of the crew members and contaminated the new species to have a possibility of developing HER Syndrome;[3] included in these deaths were all of Gilles' lovers except Rahab, for which Rahab was directly responsible.[4]

The remaining crew, including Gilles, proposed they reincarnate as gods into the world to guide the humans, unaware that several of their crewmembers were now HERs. When their colleagues Held Yggdra and Hazuki disagreed, Gilles joined the ensuing fight and was killed along with everyone else when it caused the Climb One to crash, leaving behind only his spirit data. Gilles and his colleagues remained trapped in the Climb One for some time while the new species of humans began building their societies; eventually, the humans of Magic Kingdom Levianta discovered the Climb One and established it as a holy relic called the "Sin" ark.[3]

Mantle of Lust[]

During the Levianta Catastrophe, Gilles escaped the ark along with his fellow earthlings. He was thus drawn to Held's Forest, becoming a ram forest spirit and losing his memories. As time went on, he became dissatisfied with life in the forest and sought a way out. After Hänsel and Gretel killed their foster parents in EC 014, he gathered at the Moonlit house with Vlad, Marie, Lich, Rahab, and Salem. There, they reunited with Seth and were offered vessels to inhabit as demons. Gilles accepted the offer,[5] and was thus reincarnated by Hänsel and Gretel's Re_birthday.[6] Becoming the "Demon of Lust", Gilles inhabited a katana.[7] Afterwards, the demons and their vessels of sin were scattered across the world,[8] armed with the knowledge of the sun god's rules for demons.[9]

Venomania Event[]

"That's right. This is the right choice. As proof of the contract, you've certainly received blood filled with lust. Now, shall we dance?"
―Gilles Derais[src]

When the mage I.R. offered the sword to Cherubim at the Venomania Mansion in December of EC 135, the Demon of Lust recognized the heartbroken man as a suitable host and telepathically spoke to him. After Cherubim conceded and stabbed himself in the chest with the katana to forge a contract, the Demon of Lust filled his blood with his magic, turning it purple. Cherubim then changed his face to that of his brother, rechristening himself as "Sateriasis Venomania" and the demon increased his sex drive while granting him access to his powers.[10]

Shortly after, Sateriasis attempted to use the sword in a ritual to wipe out any witness' memories. While successfully performing the ceremony, the young man unintentionally wiped his own memories and the demon was forced into a half-sleep as a result. In late January of EC 136, Sateriasis regained some of his memories while attempting to seduce Lukana Octo and the demon awoke, answering the new Duke's call. As Sateriasis asked the demon for aid, he induced the duke to undergo a demonic transformation; armed with wings, Sateriasis pursued Lukana and successfully tracked her down and brainwashed her.[11] He afterwards failed to invoke his power on Mikulia Greeonio due to the Demon of Sloth already using her as her host.[12]

Sateriasis continued to use his powers throughout the following month to enchant and abduct women from all across Asmodean and build up his harem. After the Duke deduced his fiancee Gumina Glassred rejected "him" for Cherubim during one night in March, the furious Venomania invoked the demon again and the amused Demon of Lust once more allowed Sateriasis to undergo another demonic transformation. He then watched him slaughter everyone in the Glassred Mansion before using his Lust spell to brainwash Gumina's bodyguard, Carol Shields. The duke then used Carol to capture and brainwash Gumina, wiping all her memories of Cherubim.[13]

As the year progressed, Sateriasis continued using the demon's power to enthrall more and more women into joining his harem, with the Demon of Lust's brainwashing beginning to weaken in several women over time. Later that year, the duke was stabbed by a disguised Karchess Crim using Grim the End; as the duke called out to the demon, the Demon of Lust explained how he had been defeated with another vessel of sin and would die, although the demon would only return to his vessel. Bidding him farewell, the demon left Sateriasis to his fate.[14] Its vessel was later dubbed the "Venom Sword" by I.R. as a tribute to Duke Venomania.[15]

Story of Evil[]

In EC 325, the mage AB-CIR utilized the Demon's powers to transform the face of Carlos Marlon.[16] Centuries later, Zenon Octo used the demon's power to wield the sword with ease for mugging. In EC 473, the mage Abyss I.R. defeated Zenon while he was crossing the Elphegort-Asmodean border and took the sword. At the Misty Mountains in EC 477, after Gast Venom told Yvette that General Shalgham had learned he was a descendant of Venomania, the Demon of Lust possessed the man.

Clouding his judgment as it rooted himself in his mind, the demon urged Gast into deciding to kill General Shalgham to prevent him from destroying the altar that allowed him to see his dead sister "Sarah". Gast then took the Venom Sword from Yvette and awaited Shalgham the following night. After Abyss I.R. defeated Gast, and she took back the sword and the Demon of Lust left his host.[17]

In EC 482, Queen Prim Marlon used the demon's power from the sword to seduce King Arth Lucifen d'Autriche, entering an affair with the monarch.[18] Later on, in EC 500, Abyss I.R. had the Demon of Lust possess King Kyle Marlon after Keel Freezis allowed him to examine the Venom Sword. Perverted by lust, Kyle grew madly infatuated with Keel's servant Michaela and began to consider leaving his responsibility as a ruler behind and run away with her. A few weeks after deciding on this plan, Kyle sent a formal letter of rejection to Princess Riliane.[19]

After Michaela was killed in Riliane's ensuing war to exterminate all green-haired women, Kyle joined the Lucifenian Resistance and aided the revolutionaries in overthrowing the tyrant princess. During Kyle's meeting with the imprisoned and disguised Allen Avadonia at the end of the revolution, the demon recognized his resemblance to Hänsel. Later that year, Abyss I.R. exorcised the Demon of Lust from Kyle and placed him inside one of the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia while the Venom Sword was sealed by Elluka Clockworker.

Five years later, Prim summoned the demon from the hand mirror at Castle Hedgehog to possess Kyle before she was killed by her daughter, Ney. Noticing Ney draw power from the Demon of Gluttony to undergo a demon transformation, the demon telepathically spoke to Kyle during his battle with the frenzied assassin, urging him to make a contract to save himself. As Kyle refused, and the demon ended their conversation. The mirror was then sealed by Elluka and Gumillia shortly before Abyss I.R. took the vessel and removed the seals, and the demon returned to the sword.[18]

Père Noël[]

Sometime during the late EC 590s, Julia Abelard gave the Venom Sword to Yuzette Ora after recruiting her into Père Noël and the fake fortune teller forged a contract with the demon. Over the following decade, Yuzette used the demon's power to change the faces of criminals for money.[20] After she fled from her shop in Rollam in December of EC 608, she changed her face and identity to "Isabel Ismael" and became a prostitute in Rolled. There, Isabel continued using the demon's power to seduce men for her profit.[21]

Once Yuzette was fatally stabbed by the Demon of Gluttony's servant Gretel while she possessed Lemy Abelard on February 11, EC 609, the demon relinquished his possession.[22] Many years later, the demon's vessel was successfully located by Anan Octo. After he died, his descendants began guarding the sword, with it eventually being passed to the current head Nyoze Octo. Following Nyoze's conviction in court, the sword was collected by Judge Gallerian Marlon and stored within his home. In EC 978, the Demon was called out to by awakened Clockworker's Doll but remained silent;[23] not long after, he was absorbed into Ma's soul, only to be released after she was killed in EC 999.[24]

World's End[]

Following the world's end, the demon regained his former memories as Gilles.[4] Afterward, the demons were approached by Sickle, who had himself become the sun god of the world. The demons were tasked with helping Allen Avadonia meet one of their previous contractors, with Gilles assigned Sateriasis Venomania.[25]

With Allen deviating from Sickle's plan,[26] Gilles instead gathered with the other Demons of Sin at the destruction site of Marlon, eventually meeting Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche. Being offended by her teasing, Gilles was later calmed by Rahab.[27]

Legacy[]

The humans influenced by the Demon of Lust spread varying amounts of chaos throughout the world. Duke Venomania in particular became infamous for his abductions and rumored demonic nature, his victims and their descendants linked to him facing Levin persecution for hundreds of years.[28]

Gilles continued to accept the demonic moniker after regaining his memories, though no longer possessing humans to kill boredom in light of humanity's extinction. While vaguely recalling his reincarnation, Gilles deduced his behavior was out of a desire for revenge upon the sun god, though later questioning the theory.[4]

In the Fourth Period, there existed a paper demon copy of Gilles in his demon form. [29] This demon was housed within the archive of Tokitou Masaki and seemed to retain some of the powers (albeit weaker) and memories of the original. [30]

Personality and Traits[]

"I recall that it's been an extremely long time since I've seen you looking like that."
"...Same to you. Rahab, you weren't bad as a demon, but I must say this form is most sublime and beautiful."
―Rahab and Gilles[src]

Gilles was a charismatic ladykiller. Having a liking for women, he romanced multiple lovers at the same time and was quick to flirt whenever the opposite sex was involved.[4] Conversely, he was more impatient when dealing with men, although remaining amiable regardless.[28] Having contributed to the Third Period's creation, Gilles was protective of the species that the earthlings created and vehemently opposed to leaving them to their own devices, although his HER Syndrome eventually led him to want the world's destruction; as a result, he resented Hazuki for her policy of non-interference.

This distaste made it reasonable for Gilles to desire revenge on Sickle, though willing to put aside their differences and cooperate after the Third Period's destruction. After having regained his memories, Gilles struggled to reconcile what exactly caused his reincarnation and subsequent behavior as a demon, even more curious about the gods' peculiar omission of the moon goddess' existence.[4] At the same time, he did feel nostalgia for his past life and all the memories observing the humans he possessed. He similarly found amusement in the inconvenience or suffering of others.[28]

Skills and Abilities[]

Due in part to his charisma and well-kept appearance, Gilles was skilled in the art of romance and was able to gain the affection of many women at once, although his skills had their limits.[4] He was also quite intelligent as an astrophysicist,[1] knowledgeable about the laws of the universe and the various mechanics behind the Third Period as well as the advanced technology his kind created.[3]

Possessing immense magical power, Gilles was capable of changing shape, transforming his body into both his original and demonic forms. While in the latter form, he was capable of flying at great speeds and had the strength to take another person along with ease. Regardless, the "Demon of Lust" could still teleport himself in a cloud of smoke to another location.[28]

As a Demon of Sin, the Demon of Lust was able to possess those who wielded its vessel; while possessing a host, he fueled their desires and passions, influencing their behavior. If a contract was forged, he would also grant them access to his powers, including the ability to undergo a physical demonic transformation; this gave his host increased speed, strength, claws, horns, birdlike legs, and bat-like wings to fly.[11] Although having less strength than those transformed by other Demons,[31] the hosts' claws would be strong enough to cut through steel with ease.[32] The Demon also had the ability to change the faces of other individuals, which involved slashing the target's face with the sword.[20]

Aside from these powers, the Demon of Lust's host also had the ability to brainwash members of the opposite sex to be attracted to them regardless of their sexual orientation. The host could also manipulate the memories of other people and cause them to forget past experiences, but also risked wiping their own memories in the process.[13] The Demon's host was required to take the life force of others via sexual intercourse in order to maintain the Demon's power.[12]

Although inhabiting the body of its host while possessing them, the Demon of Lust's true essence remained in the Venom Sword. Because of this, the Demon's powers could be inhibited by a sealing spell;[33] similarly, the demon was forced to abide by the "rules" put in place by Sickle until the end of the Third Period.[9] While in a vessel, the Demon could also communicate with his host through telepathy,[11] speaking in a voice described as androgynous and eerie by some and comforting by others.[17]

Character Connections[]

Sateriasis Venomania: One of the demon's contractors. The Demon of Lust believed Sateriasis to be a good candidate for contracting and found amusement in his activities while possessing him, though remarking on the man's impatience and seemingly disinterested by the Duke's death.

Kyle Marlon: One of the demon's hosts. The Demon of Lust believed Kyle to be a more boring host, although nonetheless seeing fit to reach out to him in his time of need. After his offer of aid was rejected, the Demon expressed no further interest in the king.

Rahab Barisol: One of Gilles' lovers. Impressed by her beauty and very familiar with her as one of his past romances, he was quick to suspect her of the murderer of the moon goddess as she was for his previous darlings on the Climb One. Despite this, he appeared to trust her and got along well with her otherwise.

Luna Hazuki: A fellow earthling. Although originally fine with working with Hazuki as a colleague, Gilles became resentful of her philosophy to let the humans work things out for themselves and caused chaos in the Third Period because of this.

Trivia[]

Conceptualization and Origin[]

  • His full name is a reference to Gilles de Rais, an infamous knight, sexual predator, serial killer, and inspiration for the fairy tale Bluebeard.
  • The demon's representative sin is derived from Lust of the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Swords symbolize virility and have phallic associations in some cultures; fittingly, the Demon inhabits a katana as its vessel.

Curiosities[]

  • Gilles' human form is described as an old gentleman with a well-kept beard, a wooden cane, and wearing a purple suit and silk hat.[4]
