- "But this time, what is it for? An eye for an eye? How foolish. Getting revenge or something like that will only lead to more emptiness..."
- ―Germaine Avadonia[src]
Germaine Avadonia, born Zita C. Beelzenia, was the hero of the Lucifenian Revolution and the foster sister of Allen. Following the assassination of her adoptive father, Germaine founded the Resistance to overthrow Princess Riliane's terrible regime. Having inadvertently condemned her beloved brother in her quest for vengeance, Germaine became consumed with guilt, eventually joining her former comrades as a Beelzenian soldier in opposition to King Kyle.
- "At that time, people thought that Chartette was already killed so they gave up on rescuing her. But I believed she was still alive so I tried to save her but, as a result, I got caught. If you hadn't saved me back then, I wouldn't be here today."
- ―Germaine to Allen[src]
Born into the Beelzenian Imperial Family on November 5, EC 480, Zita Beelzenia was orphaned at the age of two after Leonhart Avadonia slaughtered her family during the Kingdom of Lucifenia's war with Beelzenia. Shortly after, the knight found the baby and, recognizing the crest of her family on her clothes, subsequently adopted her and named her Germaine. Since then she accompanied her father as he traveled during Lucifenia's campaigns, waiting for him to return each day in a temporary house.Five years after she was adopted, Germaine and her father were approached by a group of hooded strangers, who demanded he give her up. Fearing for her father's life, the little girl took a sword and jumped in front of the knight, intending to protect him from the strangers. Shortly afterwards, however, Leonhart dealt with the intruders himself. At some point after the war ended, Germaine and Leonhart moved to a more permanent residence in Lucifenia.
As she grew up in her new home, Germaine often accompanied her father to the local blacksmith whenever Leonhart's weapons or armor needed repairs, becoming close childhood friends with Chartette Langley. As time progressed, Germaine constantly got in fights with guys and often got hurt.
In EC 491, she met Allen, her new foster brother. When Germaine offered to be his friend, Allen did not answer, refusing to look at or speak to her. After a few days, Chartette went missing in EC 492. Seeing that everyone gave up searching for her and believed she was dead, Germaine wondered if she was kidnapped by the bandits in the Forest of Bewilderment, and became determined to rescue her friend.Allen followed after Germaine and, when she was caught by some of the thieves, he came and rescued her. As they continued along the forest path, the two began talking to each other for the first time and shared their thoughts and feelings with one another. When they approached the bandits' hideout, they were confronted by one of the bandits and the two raised their weapons to face him. During the encounter, they discovered Chartette was safe and that the bandit had already been convinced to reform by her.
On their way back to town with Chartette, Germaine laughed at Allen's frustration before they made it back home. When they returned, Leonhart found out about their adventure and scolded them, striking Allen. Germaine was later praised for her heroism and took all the credit for the rescue. At some point, Germaine raised a puppy named "Chappy". When Germaine expressed her interest in learning fencing to Leonhart, her father refused to teach the girl.
Afterward, Germaine began spying on Leonhart teaching fencing to Allen. Awed by her foster brother's talent with the sword, the girl began secretly practicing what she saw. Later on, Germaine went to a former soldier, York, and had him help secretly instruct her in swordplay as well. At some point, while drinking with Leonhart, she listened to her father amiably relate his fight with Gast Venom to her, describing the difficulty of the battle and Gast's tendency to aim for the neck.
Seeds of RebellionEdit
- "Has the palace stores thing already been exposed?"
"Maybe Germaine, Daddy might be coming to an end. If I die, I want you to be my successor."
- ―Germaine and her father[src]
In early EC 499, Leonhart announced he would be taking Allen to work at the royal palace. That night, she fought with her foster father until dawn the next day. Nearly a year after Allen had left for the palace, Leonhart ordered Germaine to sacrifice drinking wine because of the food shortage affecting the commoners until the hunger problem was resolved. On December 26, Germaine got in a brawl with a guy in the street, defeating him easily.
The next night, she was alone at home wishing she could have a glass of wine, imagining the bottles of red wine being drunk by the aristocrats at the celebration. While wondering why her father sent Allen to the palace as a servant, rather than one of the Royal Guards, Leonhart returned home. She smelled him to make sure he didn't drink while he was gone.
Another night, Leonhart returned home depressed, worrying Germaine. When he announced the Queen ordered him to return to the palace, Germaine asked if she found out about how he was stealing food from the palace stores to feed the starving citizens. After telling her he wanted her to succeed him if he died, she told him not to say such things and asked if he could avoid the situation. Germaine, when asked, affirmed that the dress she wore was her father's birthday present. Germaine was then curious when Leonhart took out a handbag from the warehouse. The next day, she said goodbye to him.The following morning, Germaine left home to visit the nearby riverbank and wash out her face, seeing Chartette and asking why she was there. Seeing a group of people by the shore, she asked what happened and Chartette tried to tell her it was nothing. Curious, Germaine approached and recognized her foster father's corpse, shocked and in denial that it was him.
After picking up his body, she screamed for him not to die and fainted. She awoke later in Chartette's home and was offered soup by Chartette's father but declined, telling him food was scarce. Distracted by the fact her father passed away, Germaine ignored most of Chartette's recount about his death and suspected that "The Daughter of Evil" was the one who killed him. She decided she wanted revenge, and to kill Riliane.
Later, she attended Leonhart's funeral. Silent, Mariam Futapie held her and Germaine could feel her shaking. Seeing Elluka Clockworker and her apprentice also there, she nodded her head to greet them. She then vowed for her father and all the commoners of Lucifenia that she would overthrow the Queen. Forming the Resistance, Germaine visited the Forest of Bewilderment often for secret meetings in the abandoned house where Allen and she had fought off thieves years before. With the other four core members of the Resistance, she discussed the new recruits and lack of supplies. Minage told her many were willing to join but none knew how to fight and Sekka suggested they ask Keel Freezis for aid.
- "The 'Green Hunting'... I've heard rumors about it but I never thought that it would be so miserable."
- ―Germaine's reaction to Elphegort's plight[src]
During the Green Hunting, Germaine and her followers tried to put out the fire burning the Forest of Bewilderment, but were stopped by a group of Lucifenian soldiers. The soldiers told them it was being burned by order of Queen Riliane as part of the invasion of the Kingdom of Elphegort. Suddenly, a rainstorm appeared and doused the fire, forcing the soldiers to retreat. Germaine ordered the Resistance to remain vigilant in case the soldiers attempted to set fire to the forest again.
She then saw a familiar silhouette and followed the shadow into the depths of the forest, discovering an exhausted Elluka and her apprentice. Approaching them, Germaine introduced herself to the former court mage, and offered to have them rest in her home nearby. Elluka declined, revealing it would be difficult for them since they were being hunted by the Royal Palace, and the sorceress and her apprentice left. With that startling revelation, Germaine questioned what was happening at the palace that was causing this.
The Resistance gradually grew in size. Germaine was visited by Chartette at her home and told her about the reasons behind the Green Hunting, angering Germaine. Once she left, Germaine knew she couldn't waste the chance given to her to start her revolution but was uncertain how to do it.
After the Green Hunting ended and the war between Elphegort and Lucifenia continued, Germaine met with Chartette and the other four core resistance members at their base in the Forest of Bewilderment. When a mysterious knock came at the door, she asked Minage to peek outside at who it was. Confident that the six of them could take him if he was an enemy, they opened the door to be greeted by the masked man who joined their movement.
Preparation for InsurrectionEdit
- "We're here to beg for assistance... Frankly speaking, we're short on both manpower and funds."
- ―Germaine to Clarith regarding their resources for war[src]
Afterward, Chartette helped Germaine get in contact with Keel Freezis and she and York traveled to the merchant Corpa's mansion in Rolled to negotiate his aide for their resistance. While there, she passed by Keel's daughter, Yukina, and his wife, Mikina. Once they met with Keel in another room, Germaine sat down and discussed the matter with him. During their conversation, Germaine learned what had occurred with his servants Michaela and Clarith and of Michaela's recent death in the revolution.
Afterward, a knock came at the door and Germaine watched while the Keel permitted a servant to enter and overheard their conversation concerning Michaela's death. Germaine then interrupted, asking if she should leave. As Clarith apologized and prepared to exit for disrupting the conversation, the resistance leader stopped her. Once Keel confirmed that she was the Clarith they were speaking about, the merchant argued Germaine's intentions.
She and York then replied that it would be good to have another member and that it was her choice. Noticing Clarith's confusion, Germaine introduced themselves. She then begged for the Freezis' assistance to make up for the resistance's shortage in both funding and members in exchange for securing Keel's confiscated properties from Lucifenia.
Concluding her explanation, she asked if Clarith wanted to avenge Michaela's murder and, after Clarith responded she would think about it, told her she understood. Germaine proceeded to threaten the white-haired servant if she betrayed them but Keel interrupted, saying Clarith wouldn't sell them out. After Keel evaded her attempt to return to their discussion, she apologized for bothering them, thanked them for their hospitality, then left with York. The next day, at a tavern in Milanais Square, Rolled, Germaine learned from Clarith that Keel Freezis agreed to aid them; she asked Clarith if she would join her cause but the girl refused, saying that although she hated The Daughter of Evil, she was weak unlike Germaine. Apologizing, the disappointed Germaine asked what she would do, hearing the white-haired girl say she would live alone somewhere quiet, where Keel found work for her.
Wishing her well, she watched as Clarith left and soon after witnessed a couple of mercenaries from the Venom Mercenaries, Yarera and Zusco, get into a conflict with the tavern owner and stopped York from getting involved. Afterward, the Resistance and she paid for their drinks and left the bar.
Sometime later, Germaine visited their base in the Forest of Bewilderment for the last time along with York, Sekka, Minage, and the blue-haired, masked man. Discussing their army's numbers and the loyalty of the masked man, Germaine was asked by York if she actually trusted him. Approaching the mysterious member, she touched his mask and hinted to him that she suspected who he was, surprising him, and told the other members to trust him since he was helping them. He then told them to refer to him as "Karchess" and during their meeting.
Chartette's father arrived with Leonhart's armor reforged for Germaine and a large sword for her to give Chartette. Thanking him, Germaine asked if he was really allowing his daughter to fight in the coming revolution. After the old man's reply, Germaine asked York if there was any way to get her brother, Allen, out of the palace. He responded that they couldn't risk leaking intelligence to the palace and Germaine tried to reason that her brother's strong sense of justice would help them. York reported that Allen and Riliane had become very close, much to Germaine's confusion. Confident that her brother could escape on his own, she put the matter to rest.
- "Let's go! My fellow countrymen! The time has come for our revolution!"
- ―Germaine to the Resistance army[src]
She then stood up before the crowd and announced the beginning of their revolution. Commanding the battle at Rollam, Germaine and her forces were losing when the Freezis Foundation supplied them with weapons. Newly armed, Germaine faced Riliane Mouchet during the fighting before the Resistance managed to defeat the Lucifenian army. Weeks later, Germaine and her forces pushed the Lucifenian army back to the palace gates; while there, she linked up with Kyle and his forces, having successfully defeated the Venom mercenaries and cut off their reinforcements.
At the gates to the royal palace, Karchess declared to her their victory and Germaine reminded him that they needed to hurry before the soldiers fighting in Elphegort returned to reinforce the palace; teasing how lucky they were that Marlon didn't send reinforcements for the masked Kyle to overhear. While asking about her comrade's injury, Karchess warned her of Gast Venom, who retreated to the palace. York came and after Germaine apologized for the injury of Sekka, his daughter, in the fighting, she stood in front of the revolutionary army and led the charge into the palace.
Entering into the Heavenly Yard from the main gates, Germaine offered the Lucifenian forces mercy if they surrendered but her offer fell on deaf ears. The revolutionary army charged forward with their overwhelming numbers until a group of maids, led by Mariam Futapie, began halting the resistance's advance. Chartette arrived and motioned for Germaine to break into the palace while she distracted Mariam. Following Karchess inside, she ordered for the army to assault the palace, hoping Chartette would survive before continuing the charge inside the palace walls.
As they made their way into the Hall of Mirrors, Germaine suggested they split up, leaving him to keep anyone from escaping while she handled the search for Riliane. When Karchess said Chartette gave him the topography of the palace, Germaine pointed out that he'd have been there before. Afterwards, the masked man asked if she had any plans after the revolution was over and she replied that she wanted to see his face. Saying he'd consider it, Karchess told her not to die and the swordswoman responded in kind before leaving with his group.
As she prepared to lead her team to the Hall of Sounds, they were confronted by Gast Venom. Recognizing him from Karchess' description, Germaine threatened to make him pay for killing Marc. As the confused Gast scoffed that he didn't remember the names of the people he killed, Germaine remained composed and pointed out the unfair odds he was up against while readying her sword. Signaling for the royal guard to enter, Gast stated he'd borrow their strength to help as they surrounded the revolutionaries.
After Gast inquired if her civilian band could beat the strongest knights in the Kingdom, a soldier apologized for having to face her and Germaine reluctantly rallied her troops. Charging at Gast and the guards, the two forces entered into battle. During the scuffle, Germaine berated Gast for insulting the soldiers; the mercenary questioned her support for her enemies and the swordswoman declared she'd only need to kill him to break their resolve.
When Gast prepared to strike, Germaine hesitated and barely dodged his swift attack. Impressed, Gast launched another flurry of swings at her and she dodged them all. As she recalled that her father had mentioned fighting the mercenary before, Germaine saw Gast relent and used the opportunity to strike. Falling for the feint, Germaine saw the next strike and attempted to dodge, the strike grazing her eyelid.
Blinded by the bleeding, Germaine heard Gast's approach and mentally asked Leonhart what she should do. Before Gast dealt the fatal blow, recalled her father mention he always aimed for the neck. Listening for his movements, Germaine dodged the attack and struck him with her blade. She then turned to face her wounded opponent and the dying Gast questioned how she evaded him while blinded.
Reminding him of the heraldry she wore, he laughed at not recognizing her as the daughter of his old friend, Leonhart. Germaine asked if he saw the servant to the princess, Allen, with The Daughter of Evil and he responded that he didn't know where they were. Asking why he didn't escape and kept fighting, Gast replied that it was because he fought for the money.
After the mercenary's death, Chartette came, and was worried about Germaine's injury until the resistance leader told her it would heal. Curious about Chartette's battle, Germaine listened as she told her how the injured Mariam escaped before York told her Karchess' report of the death of Prime Minister Minis. Unable to locate either the princess or her brother, Germaine ordered them to help her search for Riliane. York and Chartette stopped her and told her to rest because of her injury and went on without her.
Germaine underwent emergency treatment for her eye and rushed toward the Hall of Sounds after hearing a report that the princess was captured. Despite York's pleas, Germaine pushed herself so she could personally confirm it despite her injury. Narrowing her vision, she vaguely saw the form of the princess although the face was obscure to her. For a moment, she was unconvinced until the captured Riliane struggled and screamed for the revolutionaries to let go of her.
- "If this country is led by the revolutionary army, then I would like to ask, who among them have political experience? None. The revolutionary army is composed of peasantry, and you expect to reform the country?"
- ―Kyle's argument for Marlon's occupation[src]
Five days later, Germaine attended the peace talks in the Hall of Sounds between the Resistance, Marlon, and Elphegort. Congratulated by Keel Freezis, the red-armored warrior thanked the merchant for his support that gave her their victory. With the arrival of the Elphegort king, Thorny Elphen, and after confirming attendance, Germaine told the King of Marlon to start. Karchess, removing his mask, revealed he was Kyle Marlon, surprising everyone but Germaine. When she sarcastically asked why "Karchess" wasn't wearing his mask, the Marlon King responding that there was no longer any need to conceal his identity.
As the meeting continued, Germaine urged the Elphegort king to show mercy to the captured Lucifenian soldiers and discussed the surviving members of the Three Heroes: Mariam and Elluka. She asked if Mariam's body was killed due to her battle with Chartette but Kyle responded that it was due to a stab wound through her back. As Kyle announced that Lucifenia would become a Marlon territory, Germaine calmed the seething York to let the Marlon King finish. When invited to be part of Kyle's Lucifenian government, she refused. When asked if she met the arrested princess, Germaine told Kyle she only removed her bandages the day before. She, along with the rest present at the meeting, did not object as Kyle announced The Daughter of Evil's execution.
Daughters of EvilEdit
- "This isn't a revolution; it's revenge! You used the people in order to get revenge!"
- ―Allen's backlash for Germaine's motivations[src]
Germaine later went to the underground prison to visit the princess before her death. Announcing her name from across the iron bars, the swordswoman was surprised when the princess began to laugh and told her how irregular it was for her to laugh before being killed. While The Daughter of Evil approached her, she told the spoiled princess her execution date and that it was the time for her to confess her crimes to God. After disregarding the resistance leader and telling her to leave, Germaine recognized her face as that of Allen.
Shocked and perplexed, Germaine discovered that the prisoner was her foster brother and listened as he told her the whole story about how the princess was his twin sister and that he swapped places with her so she could escape. After letting Allen's surprising revelation sink in, she told him he could be released. Despite Allen's insistence that it was impossible, Germaine tried to convince him that since he was a servant, he should be freed and everyone should be told.
Germaine argued that she now understood his hostility when they first met and how he selflessly saved her and Chartette even when everyone else gave up, saying he wasn't the villain. Her foster brother retorted that Kyle visited earlier and already determined his execution date, warning her to be wary of him. Finding it all odd, Germaine ran to the lounge room and returned with the prison keys to free him, telling him they needed to escape with Chartette and live happily together, discarding her responsibilities as the revolution's leader.
Tears welling in her eyes at how they could escape even though their foster father was dead, Allen asked her about their father's refashioned armor she wore and if Chartette's father fixed the damaged shoulder. Surprised, Germaine told him it was The Daughter of Evil and her brother only laughed after discovering her motives for the revolution was her vengeance. Calling his sister a Daughter of Evil like Riliane, Germaine weakly denied it and begged him not say it. Ignoring her, Allen told her he would assist her in her revenge because he was the one who murdered their foster father. Germaine screamed, her cries echoing throughout the prison.
Two days later, Germaine stood on the execution platform in Milanais Square. She wondered how Leonhart was doing in heaven and fantasized that him, Mariam Futapie, and the Royal Guards partying together while he drank. In contrast, she thought about how everyone alive was leaving or getting lonelier. From among the crowds she saw Chartette causing a commotion as they all awaited the death of The Daughter of Evil. She asked her deceased parent if the "Evil" would end after the execution. After the public execution which resulted in her foster brother's death, Germaine returned to the palace.
- "Go find and arrest the leader of the revolutionary army, Germaine Avadonia!"
- ―King Kyle[src]
Germaine later left the palace to go on holiday, joined by Chartette. At some point, she sent a letter to Keel to thank him for his help and to report the situations of Chartette and her other friends. Three months into their trip, Kyle ordered for the revolutionary hero's arrest after incorporating Lucifenia as a Marlon territory and Germaine was forced to become a fugitive.
Joined by Chartette, the two began traveling together across the region while avoiding capture from Marlon. While journeying through Asmodean, Germaine met her father's former sword instructor, Nahed, and received the old man's training. During that period, she witnessed the unique assassination techniques employed in the nation, seeing the wire glove technology used in conjunction with acrobatics.
In EC 503, the two met up with the former resistance members in the Beelzenian Empire. Seeking refuge, the two rejoined the Resistance as it took shelter from Marlon. In EC 504, the two became soldiers for the Empire and resided around Rukolbeni. While serving as part of the Langley Troops defending the border, Germaine spent large amounts of time drinking instead of performing her military duties.
- "Where has big sister gone off to?"
"I don't know. She might be off drinking somewhere."
- ―Chartette and York[src]
After Yukina explained she hadn't seen him for a year because of traveling, the former revolutionary recounted how she too had been gone on a journey with Chartette after everything in Lucifenia became "troublesome". Pried by Yukina for the details, she avoided a specific answer and queried why the child came to Beelzenia. The curious girl stated it was to ask questions and when Germaine attempted to brush her off again until the child asked about the Witch Hunt. Displeased by Yukina's information, she responded that it was fake and explained what transpired.
Yukina then noted that Kyle believed Germaine killed Michaela in order to start up the Revolution, hence his actions. After a long pause, the swordswoman asked where she heard that and Yukina stated it was from her journey. Uncertain on its validity, Germaine replied that it was not a reason for Kyle's sudden change. Once Yukina asked if she did kill Michaela, Germaine, in disbelief, questioned its importance to her; learning she was the child's servant, Germaine questioned if she planned to arrest her and bring her to Marlon. With the novelist's assurance she just wanted to know the truth, Germaine admitted she never even met Michaela.
After chastising the child's naivety, Germaine was confused by Yukina's decision to live with there with them. Despite her string of excuses for why the child couldn't stay, Yukina confidently stated she would even use her family's influence. Germaine then asked if she was at least ashamed of using her family relations to get what she wanted, and the child admitted not at all. In response, the shocked Germaine commented that she was an evil girl and relented her opposition.
Two weeks later, Germaine went to a bar in Rukolbeni and drank bottles of wine until she went into a deep slumber. When Yukina and Chartette attempted to wake her to fight off the undead monster following them, she simply muttered in her sleep and snored. Three days later, Germaine helped in the battle against the army of the undead conjured by Ney Futapie. Fighting alongside Chartette, she told her friend they couldn't let the monsters reach Fifth Street until all the refugees took shelter.
Asked their numbers, Germaine stated there were five and told Chartette to take them on. When Chartette barked to look left, the former revolutionary hacked one of the reanimated soldiers chasing the Beelzenian forces in half and asked if they were endless. During a brief reprieve, Germaine saw Yukina supplying aid to the soldiers and asked why she was there instead of the Imperial City. Noting she couldn't fight, the former hero recommended she stay off the front lines.
When Yukina asked, Germaine stated she was indeed a great help, but that York might not like the idea. Yukina added that it was also a unique experience and Germaine sighed, noting that the young novelist treated it like a game. When another soldier was anticipated to come their way, they waited for it but instead saw Riliane Mouchet approach on horseback with the soldier skewered on her lance, claiming she came to speak with the Emperor. When the Empire launched its offensive on Retasan Fortress, Germaine refused to participate and often stayed in Rukolbeni's bar on its first street. One day, Riliane joined her at the bar and the two conversed amiably whilst drinking. Yukina then arrived and joined them, conversing with the former Retasan commander. Teased by Riliane for her sorry state, Germaine insisted the corpse soldier problem wasn't resolved and that someone needed to stay behind.
Riliane retorted that the Beelzenian soldier didn't want to fight, calling her a coward. Germaine then suggested Riliane go in her place before muttering that the fighting is pointless and explained her belief that the fighting was pointless vengeance and amounted to nothing. After a long silence, Riliane queried if she spoke from experience and asked if the rumors were true that she started the revolution to have revenge on The Daughter of Evil for killing her father. Germaine angrily denied it and the two stared intently at each other.
When Yukina asked to confirm that they referred to Leonhart, the former revolutionary remained silent while Riliane answered. When the refugee said her actions were dumb and that she went through with it regardless to kill a more tyrant, Germaine feebly retorted that her idea of it was too simplistic. Riliane then recounted her father's praise for Leonhart and his straightforward nature and Germaine declared that was why any man could kill him. After Riliane asked if she was ashamed of Leonhart, Germaine responded she respected him and Riliane then implored her to follow in his footsteps and take action.
Finished with their conversation, Germaine said she was drunk and would return after sorting things out at their headquarters. Once Riliane said she had to sober up first, Germaine stared and asked about Commander Gaston's death in the revolution and if she held any hate for the Resistance. With Riliane's response that she simply came to see the soldiers who defeated her father and bore no grudge against them, Germaine left the bar, satisfied, and reported to their base.
Service to the SorceressEdit
- "You do realize it, right? That you're on the Witch Hunt list? It's too dangerous to go to Marlon or Lucifenia!"
"Don't worry. I've hired a bodyguard."
- ―Yukina and Gumillia[src]
Soon after, Germaine suggested they conduct nightly raids on Retasan and spread rumors that would sow chaos among Ney's soldiers. With the plan's success, much of Retasan was captured within several days and Germaine was planned to be given a celebration. In the midst of the successful campaign, Gumillia arrived in the city and hired Germaine to be her personal bodyguard as they traveled back to Lucifenia to investigate Ney and Kyle. Interested in learning the reasons for Kyle's actions, Germaine accepted the job and took a temporary leave from the Beelzenian army.
The next day, the swordswoman attended to the carriage when she overheard Gumillia speaking with someone and came up to ask what was wrong. Seeing Yukina, Germaine didn't hide her disapproval and answered Yukina's questions regarding her presence there. Yukina asked if she was interested in "sin" and, confused by what she meant, Germaine said she only wanted to meet with Kyle, admitting Riliane was right and she had to do her best for her country.
Refusing to say goodbye, Yukina joined them on the carriage and the mercenary demanded to know what she was doing. After the young novelist explained her plan to have them infiltrate the palace as her servants, Germaine protested. Noting that she planned to use her family's influence again, she sighed and stated it was Gumillia's decision. When the sorceress agreed to let Yukina go along, the exasperated Germaine commented on how she had to look after more people.
Infiltrating the PalaceEdit
- "Long time no see, Germaine. I never thought you would actually come to me."
"I've grown tired of running away."
- ―King Kyle and Germaine[src]
After they reached Rollam, Germaine and her compatriots checked in at a hotel in the city. Learning that Kyle was attending a dinner party at Corpa's mansion, the mage and her sellsword disguised themselves as Yukina's masked Asmodean bodyguards of the Almoga Morabez ethnicity; the three then went to the estate but neither Germaine nor Gumillia were permitted to enter, allowing Yukina to enter and tell Kyle of her planned visit to the royal palace.
The next day, they donned their disguises again and entered the palace with Yukina. The three knelt before Kyle while the young novelist greeted him. When a guard demanded they remove their masks, Gumillia stated it was the law of their family to not reveal their faces and Kyle accepted their wishes. As Yukina prepared to search the palace for new novel ideas, they accompanied her out of the Hall of Mirrors.
That evening, the three of them were invited to stay at the Lucifenian Royal Palace and they moved into the palace's guest rooms. During their stay, Germaine learned from Yukina that Kyle kept one of the vessels of sin, a hand mirror, in his possession as a gift from his mother. Devising a plan with Gumillia, the mage decided they'd steal the hand mirror from Kyle's bedroom and escape.
Later that night, as they prepared to execute their plan, they were attacked by the Espionage Task Force and their room was bombed. Surviving the blast, the two "bodyguards" fled while battling the task force members throughout the palace. Once they secured the mirror from Kyle's room, Gumillia took Yukina to Riliane's old room next door while Germaine stayed to act as a diversion. After being bombed again by the task force squad, Germaine was surrounded by the masked agents.Kyle then entered the room and ordered the task force to withdraw and Germaine remarked that he kept a rowdy bunch of troops. When Kyle demanded she reveal herself, Germaine removed her tattered disguise and the King expressed his surprise she'd actually come to him. The swordswoman retorted she was tired of running.
After Kyle commended her for coming to confess and be executed for her crimes, the former resistance leader smiled and asked when she had ever committed a crime. She then placidly listened to Kyle's accusations that she killed Michaela with Elluka and Gumillia to earn his and Keel's help in her revolution against Riliane.
Once he finished, Germaine started at Kyle in silence before she sighed, questioning if he'd even listen to her rebuttals on the topic. As Kyle insisted that it was their conspiracy, citing that someone had witnessed their meeting, Germaine asked if that was what it all was about. Kyle then explained that only he, Keel, and Elluka knew of Michaela's whereabouts; noting that Keel was arrested and that the sorceress had arrived shortly after him, Germaine listened to Kyle accuse her of teaming up with the mages to fan the flames of war against Riliane.
Giving him a pitiful look, Germaine answered that it'd be difficult to reason with his speculations. She then reminded the King of what Allen had told them and Kyle answered that Allen didn't kill Michaela. Shocked, Germaine listened as Kyle explained that Allen confessed of someone else killing the maid to Keel in prison. Germaine inquired why and Kyle answered that he heard it from Keel after the revolution; he then noted Allen had no reason to lie and asked her why he'd suddenly say he did it.
As Kyle declared Allen lied to protect his foster sister, Germaine let the realization sink in before sighing. When Kyle asked if he touched a nerve, Germaine smiled again and thanked the King for lifting her burden. In response to Kyle's confusion, Germaine reiterated that she didn't kill Michaela. Kyle then asked if she expected him to believe her and the swordswoman responded that she knew he wouldn't, despite them having fought side by side in the past.
The King then asserted that none of that proved she didn't kill Michaela and the swordswoman countered that nothing proved she had either. Kyle then threatened her, raising his sword, and Germaine questioned if he had another reason, pointing out he'd be in trouble if she was proven innocent. She then continued, saying it was fine if he didn't believe her but that fueling his goals with revenge left him empty, like she had been in the past. The swordswoman declared that vengeance created voids and they simply made new enemies to fill the voids.
The then swordswoman petitioned Kyle to forsake his revenge and think of the future, pursuing their ideals together. She then noticed Kyle grow pale and asked what was wrong. As Clive demanded to know what she did to the King, Germaine argued that she did nothing. When Kyle weakly demanded she give him the hand mirror, the confused warrior admitted she didn't take it. Once she overheard Kyle ordering Clive to kill her, Germaine wondered if it was time to go and broke through the bedroom window to the outside.
Pursued throughout the palace by Clive and the Espionage Task Force for some time, Germaine spotted something flying in the sky. Soon after, she met up with Yukina and an injured Gumillia. Blamed for the King's sudden disappearance, they fled and eventually evaded their pursuers. Later on, when the two explained that the demon possessing Kyle had transformed him into a monster, Germaine recounted what she had seen in the sky, tracing the trajectory northwest towards the Millennium Tree Forest.
Battle in the ForestEdit
- "Isn't it obvious? Demons are beyond our scope of understanding. I don't know how to deal with one."
Two weeks since escaping the palace, Gumillia decided they should check areas Kyle might've gone to in the forest. Along with her companions, Germaine trudged through the Forest of Bewilderment as the lead. After some hours of walking, the three of them made their way into Elphegort's Millennium Tree Forest half and the swordswoman admitted with a shrug that she only knew the Lucifenian part of the forest. She then allowed Gumillia to take the lead in their journey.
As they walked, Germaine noticed that Yukina was uneasy and she asked if the girl wanted to rest for a time. As Yukina insisted she was fine, Germaine pointed to the light ahead and said that the place Gumillia wished to go to was nearby, telling her to bear with them a little more. Hearing the young writer state how she didn't want to see her acquaintance turn into a demon, Germaine asked if she was sure the demon was Kyle and the girl affirmed it was. Brushing off some vegetation, the swordswoman remarked that the world was full of too many incredible things.
Hearing Yukina raise her voice and angrily ask how she could be so calm when she had once fought alongside Kyle, Germaine apologized and clarified how she only meant she didn't know what to think anymore. As the writer asked why, she asked if it was obvious, stating that demons were beyond their comprehension and that she didn't know what to deal with it.
Smiling a little, she told the girl that for now they would have to do what Gumillia said. When Yukina asked if they would need a more open space if they were going to fight, Germaine stated that it was perhaps so, noting at the very least they would have to defeat the demon and wondering if there was any space in the forest. After saying so, the three of them walked for some time before Germaine saw Gumillia come to a stop.
Catching on the sorceress' line of sight, Germaine spotted a well and wondered aloud what it was doing in the forest. Walking on ahead, she wondered if someone used to live here; inspecting it further, she noticed aloud how deep it was and that it had a ladder going down into it. As she examined it, she heard Yukina explain it was the Freezis family's secret base for emergencies, and that down the ladder was an iron door into the base. Catching on, Germaine realized that this was the site of Michaela's murder, which Yukina confirmed.
Walking quietly to the well, Germaine closed her eyes until hearing Gumillia say there were traces of magic nearby. Tensing, she asked if Kyle was nearby and the sorceress answered that he could have been here. Grabbing onto the ladder, Germaine stated she would investigate for a clue and she climbed down into the well; thirty minutes later, however, the swordswoman returned and shook her head, stating that she hadn't found anything.
Gumillia then stated they should leave to check other areas and Yukina insisted they go save Kyle from the clutches of evil. Sighing, Germaine replied it was still a shame they couldn't find anything, only to hear the writer reply that wasn't true as she walked behind her. Asking her what she found, she heard Yukina say that she now knew for sure that Germaine didn't kill Michaela. The three then encountered the grave of a soldier, Ayn, and prayed to it before moving on.
At some point afterwards, the demon-transformed Kyle tracked the three and attacked Germaine in a crazed frenzy. Although managing to fend him off, Germaine saw Kyle begin shifting his onslaught to Yukina and tackled her to dodge him. With her sword broken, Germaine was left vulnerable but the Marlon king was quelled by Gumillia and Michaela, freeing Kyle of the Demon of Pride's influence.
Voyage to MarlonEdit
- "Huh? We're fighting together?"
"Of course, that was my intention."
- ―Germaine and Kyle[src]
During their voyage, Germaine suffered through the rocky voyage. After Yukina entered her quarters to take shelter from the pirate attack the next day, Germaine voiced her feeling she was going to vomit. The two then agreed to go above deck so she could avoid doing it in the ship and exited the cabin. While Yukina watched Kyle battle with the pirates, Germaine attempted to reach the end of the deck before feeling queasy. Putting her left hand on the nearby mast, the swordswoman threw up at its base, one of the pirates voicing his disgust.
Once she finished vomiting, the swordswoman looked up and recognized the pirates as Yarera and Zusco. When Kyle went over to offer her his handkerchief, questioning if she knew them, the swordswoman said she knew a little about the former mercenaries before reminding him that he was there at the Lucifenian tavern at the start of the revolution too. As the pirate brothers prepared to fight, Kyle whispered to Germaine that she should avoid killing them so he could find out who hired them.
Taken aback, the swordswoman questioned if he expected them to fight together. When Kyle affirmed the intention, she pointed out she lacked a weapon. Kyle then sarcastically pointed out that she was supposed to have been Gumillia's bodyguard and the swordswoman retorted that her armor was suffocating and that he was the reason her sword had broke to begin with. Yukina then called out to Germaine and threw a wrapped up object at her feet. Once she unwrapped it and discovered it was a new rapier, Yukina yelled that Chartette had handed it to her before they left and told her to use it.
Unsheathing her sword, Germaine took a stance and noted it felt great, thanking the writer; as she tried to maintain her standing, Kyle asked if she was okay, saying she didn't have to push herself. The swordswoman countered that he was telling her to "fight" a minute ago. When the king then questioned if she was actually suffering from a hangover, Germaine insisted she didn't have any alcohol and was just seasick before losing her footing again. Once Kyle said they'd make the most of it and the pirates began to draw near, the woman smiled and dueled the brothers, remaining calm as she easily dodged their attacks.
As the duel continued, Kyle joined in and they began being surrounded by the Victoricia's crew and the pirates they captured. She then watched as Zusco launched a wire and flung himself back to the pirate ship with his brother. Recognizing the technique, she remarked her experience with them in Asmodean to Kyle. The king inquired if she had used them and Germaine shook her head, saying it was necessary to train for it from an early age and that it wasn't something they could learn overnight. They then watched the two pirates escape on the ship before it suddenly sank, noticing a giant octopus was the cause.
As they attempted to evade the creature, Kyle called out to Germaine while holding close to Yukina. Frustrated, the swordswoman sarcastically regarded how suave he was with trying to get closer to young women. The king shot back that he thought it was fine if it was her. Puffing her cheeks, she countered that everyone would be treating her different. After Kyle asked if she was even afraid of the monster, Germaine admitted she was surprised before laughing and teasing that she had already seen a winged monster. The king then tasked the swordswoman with protecting Yukina and she obliged.
Guests of the MerchantEdit
- "You were late today and Kyle's not here. You're also tired from the voyage. Bedrooms have been prepared so you should rest easy. Let me try hearing the full story tomorrow."
- ―Keel to Germaine and Gumillia[src]
After the octopus was defeated and they arrived at Jamet, Germaine and the others said goodbye to the sailors while they headed off to party; the group then took three carriages prepared for them, Germaine joining Gumillia and two attendants. While traversing the uneven cobblestone roads to Bariti, Germaine suffered from motion sickness due to the bumpy ride. After they arrived at the Freezis Mansion, the swordswoman dismounted from the carriage and waited behind the Freezis children at the entrance with Gumillia.
As a servant was sent to summon Keel, Germaine asked if they should leave since it was a parent-child reunion and Yukina answered that they wouldn't be a bother. Afterward, Germaine watched the merchant rush over and dote on his daughter before Yukina introduced him to the two visitors. Keel then formally greeted the two, noting it had been a while, and welcomed them inside to chat at the dinner table after their long journey. The three went to the dining hall and spoke about matters before the rest of Keel's family joined them.
Once the food was served and they were all seated, Germaine ate with Gumillia and the family, gorging herself on all the food. During the meal, Germaine expressed her delight at the taste of Marlon cuisine and Keel retorted that it was actually seasoned like Elphegortean food. Surprised, the bodyguard listened as Keel explained that she could order true Marlon cuisine at one of the local taverns, though he didn't recommend it.
After they all had finished and Germaine drank the bottle of sherry wine, the merchant recommended their two guests rest in the bedrooms they repaired and recount what had happened to him tomorrow. The drunk swordswoman expressed her thanks before ranting about the details of her terrible seafaring, adding that they would've been dead had they been at sea any longer. Yukina and Shaw then recommended they wait to tell the full story until the day after and the entire table retired for the night. At some point, Germaine donated her Almoga Mobarez disguise to Keel for his collection.
Encounter with the SorceressEdit
Sometime later, Yukina rushed to Germaine and told her how Elluka had visited but was acting strange. The child explained to the swordswoman how Elluka didn't know her name despite meeting her before, refused Yukina's offer of black tea that she loved, and referred to Gumillia in an endearing manner. While voicing her skepticism that anything was wrong, they suddenly heard a sharp noise and ran outside the Freezis home to see Elluka and Gumillia battling one another.
After revealing that she was Abyss I.R., the sorceress summoned three black bears to attack Gumillia. With her sword augmented by the green-haired mage, Germaine easily killed all three. When Abyss I.R. grabbed Gumillia only for both to be thrown into the air, Germaine took advantage of the situation and attempted to finish off the sorceress. Gumillia stopped her, saying that Elluka had regained control.
With the battle over, Germaine carried the unconscious Gumillia back to the mansion with Elluka and Yukina in tow. Once the mage was placed in her bed, they sat down to discuss what had happened. After Elluka confirmed her identity for them, she explained how she and Gumillia had infiltrated the royal palace after discovering the Venom Sword lacked its demon, aware Kyle had been possessed by the demon.
Once the sorceress explained the demon previously possessing Kyle was the Demon of Lust, not the Demon of Pride they encountered, Germaine grinned at the thought of a demon influencing Kyle's sex drive. The mage then summarized that they went to Marlon to confront Queen Dowager Prim over Kyle's two possessions but were ambushed by Abyss I.R. and the Espionage Task Force, forcing Elluka to transfer her spirit into Gumillia's body for the time being.
Afterward, they all saw a red cat enter the room and meow and realized it was Abyss I.R.'s pet. After Elluka and Yukina expressed their dislike for cats, the novelist asked Germaine if she'd keep it and the swordswoman apologized, refusing as well. They then heard Mikina calling for the cat and pop her head in, surprised to see Elluka there. Germaine then watch as the aristocrat argued with Yukina over her decision to keep the pet.
Tides of BattleEdit
- "I'm not interested in money, I'm not a mercenary."
"Then what do you want? I'll live up to the demand as best I'm able."
"If you say that you'll withdraw Marlon from Lucifenia, I may think about it."
- ―Germaine and Kyle[src]
After he showed her into the room, Germaine folded her arms and watched while Elluka explained what had happened to the King. Afterwards, Kyle explained how the corpse soldiers were sighted up north and that Queen Dowager Prim and Ney both seemed to be at Castle Hedgehog, hence why he planned to soon march his armies upon the castle.
Once he asked if they'd help him subdue the corpse soldiers and Elluka gave her refusal, Kyle asked Germaine for her answer. Expressing her belief that it was simply another country's problem and she didn't have any obligation to cooperate, Germaine scoffed that she wouldn't fight unless it was for world peace. When Kyle offered a reward for her help, she turn it down, reminding him she wasn't a mercenary. Kyle then asked what she desired, offering to provide anything within his power.
Placing her hand on her chin, Germaine thought it over before stating she'd think about it if he withdrew Marlon's occupation of Lucifenia. Once the King retorted that he couldn't simply do that of his own will, the swordswoman pointed out that he had annexed the territory at his discretion. Recognizing the political difficulty Kyle was considering, Germaine compromised with just working towards that result instead of an immediate withdrawal and Kyle agreed, promising to try his best. Pleased with the results of their deal, Germaine said she'd have to practice swinging for the coming battle.
She then leaped out the window and began practicing her swordplay. Later, Germaine gave her sword to Gumillia and she engraved it with an enchantment for their battle against the corpse soldiers. At some point, she agreed to be one of the commanders for the first army along with Kyle. A few days since their meeting, Germaine set out with Kyle and the others for Lioness.
Arriving at Lioness Castle, Germaine later attended Kyle's meeting with the first army that night. Once the King introduced her, she stepped forward and expressed her understanding if they didn't like having a new commander, wishing them well. After the soldiers cheered for her, the swordswoman joined in the subsequent banquet, drinking with the troops.
Battle of Castle HedgehogEdit
- "Some of you may be unhappy about having a new commanding officer... My best regards."
- ―Germaine to the first army[src]
The next morning, Germaine set out with the first army towards Castle Hedgehog and trudged through the heavy rain. Once they arrived at the castle's main gate, Germaine waited with Kyle and the other soldiers for the vanguard the king sent to report back. Once they heard the soldiers scream about the corpse soldiers and Kyle gave the order, Germaine joined the charged inside.
After entering the building, Germaine helped Kyle fend off the monsters in the banquet hall. Saying they needed to go after Ney, the two gathered a few troops and chased after her. Once they entered the courtyard, Germaine said they should split up into two groups and agreed to check the rest of the castle while Kyle's group searched Heartbeat Clocktower. When the king complained about the difficulty to funnel troops up the narrow tower, Germaine replied that it was the fortune of war.
Kyle shared the sentiment then laughed, bewildering Germaine. After explaining that the situation reminded him of five years ago, the swordswoman realized he referred to the revolution and expressed her hope it would be different. When asked, she explained that he implied she'd have a difficult battle afterward, referencing Gast Venom. Just then, Germaine noticed they were being ambushed; as Kyle told her to watch out, Germaine retorted she knew and readied her sword.
Confronted by the four women, Germaine listened to them identify themselves as the Espionage Task Force's assassination squad, claiming to be equal to Mariam Futapie's skill. Looking back to Kyle, Germaine told the king to head up the clock tower. As he tried to protest, the swordswoman interjected that him dying would only incur the public's resentment and that she could handle the troops here while he tried to force their leader to surrender. Afterward, she attacked the assassins; the King abided and left, leaving a few troops to help her battle the squad.
Once she subdued the assassins, Germaine battled the corpse soldiers throughout the castle. After seeing the undead army collapse back to being corpses, Germaine rushed up Heartbeat Clocktower. As she entered the room at the top of the tower, she saw Kyle about to be killed by Ney and screamed his name before rushing to his aid. Lunging at the golden-haired assassin, Germaine managed to distract Ney long enough for Kyle to use Chartette's rocket glove to incapacitate her.
Afterwards, she ran over to help support Kyle in standing, asking if he was alright. The King answered that he was fine and then, noting she was safe as well, Germaine explained what happened with the undead army. When Kyle asked to borrow her sword, she inquired why and he expressed his intention to kill Ney. Germaine refused and, while Kyle stated he needed to handle the mismanagement of their family with his own hands, Germaine looked to see the Queen Dowager dead in her chair.
Surprised, Germaine calmly admitted she didn't know the circumstances but explained that him killing a helpless opponent wouldn't be overlooked. Releasing Kyle, the swordswoman picked up Ney and told Kyle she'd take her back to the castle. Before she could say more, several soldiers entered the chambers and rushed to Kyle's side. As they spoke with their King about what happened, Germaine smiled and told him to support them before leaving with Ney.
Meeting in LionessEdit
- "You done? You two can have your strange little discussion alone later. Right now, we have to decide what to do about her."
- ―Germaine regarding Ney[src]
After the battle, Germaine met with Kyle, Keel, Yukina, Gumillia, and Elluka in one of the castle's bedrooms while the Marlon King explained what had transpired with Queen Dowager Prim and Ney. When Kyle presented the glass and hand mirror vessels of sin, Germaine asked to confirm that the mirror was the same as the one Kyle had before and the King agreed, placing the other mirror and doll there in the cabinet. Once all the vessels of sin everyone had were accounted for, Germaine watched Keel and Elluka go back and forth about the demon-possessed objects.
She then interrupted and told them to have their conversation later, noting they still had to decide what to do with Ney. After staring at the comatose Ney across from them in silence, Germaine listened as the others debated healing Ney. After Elluka conceded to try, Germaine smiled while leaning against the wall. Noting that Ney's behavior was due to Abyss I.R.'s magic and a demon, Germaine inquired if there was any room for leniency for her; calling out to Kyle, the King agreed with her assessment.
The group then heard a rattling sound outside the room. Keel offered to check it out, claiming to be the only one uninjured in some form, and they heard him talking to someone outside the room before being swiftly interrupted by a dull sound. After the door opened and the room was enveloped by a blue flash, Germaine was rendered unconscious. Once she and the others awoke, they discovered the vessels of sin missing, Keel seriously injured, and Ney dead. Everyone was then moved to another room for treatment and a doctor determined Keel's life was unlikely endangered.
Afterward, Germaine returned to the bedroom to check up on the still unconscious Kyle. Shaking him, she asked if he was alive and alright when he awoke. Called a demon by the King, Germaine remarked how awful his words were, reminding him who she was. When Kyle asked where everyone else was, she described how they were safe before noting she had bad news, describing what happened to Keel and the vessels. As Germaine prepared to tell him about Ney, the King saw the corpse before him and told her she needn't say it.
Search for MikinaEdit
- "We usually receive some donation... but since we originally received generous donations from the Freezis family, we won't ask you to give us money, Lady Yukina... Of course, your friend Lady Germaine as well."
Having fulfilled her role as her escort, Gumillia released Germaine from her service. Over the course of two weeks, Germaine assisted Elluka and Gumillia in their search for the perpetrator. During the period, Germaine heard Elluka's deduction that Abyss I.R. was actually the red cat she always had with her and that she had taken possession of the missing Mikina to steal the vessels of sin.
Determining Lucifenia was the fugitive mage's most likely destination, Elluka asked the swordswoman to search the area and eliminate the cat mage while Gumillia searched Levianta and she continued to search Marlon. Germaine agreed to the task; before she left, Gumillia engraved a rune into her sword to help her locate Abyss' true form once she found her.
After arriving at the Lucifenian port town, the swordswoman searched the town til sunset. She then saw Yukina staring at the coast and inquired if she had gotten lost. When the surprised girl asked why she was there, Germaine scoffed at the greeting and pointed out that she was originally a Lucifenian citizen. The writer then asked about her service to Gumillia and she explained what happened. After Yukina noted it sounded lonely, Germaine cast down the notion.
The swordswoman then questioned what the girl was doing there and Yukina answered she was traveling to visit an old acquaintance of hers. Doubtful, Germaine teased whether she was running away again. At Yukina's insistence she planned to return home after her errand, Germaine asked about her destination and the young writer related it was the nearby Held Monastery, though not knowing where it was exactly. Recognizing she meant the hillside church, Germaine told her she knew where it was, though not having been inside there herself.
The swordswomen then started heading for the monastery and beckoned to Yukina, claiming she was awful at giving directions and would lead her there. Once they reached the monastery's gates, Germaine went inside and headed towards the main buildings. When a teenage boy came up and demanded to know their business there, the annoyed Germaine chastised the kid's attitude, scoffing at the apparent lack of manners taught there. As the boy argued back and reiterated his demands, Germaine faltered and looked over to Yukina for help.
While Yukina tried to explain their purpose there, Clarith walked up and apologized for the boy's rude behavior. Taken aback, Germaine expressed her surprise to see the nun there. Once Clarith realized who they were and happily greeted Yukina, the nun took them inside and showed them into one of the guest rooms. While pouring tea for the three of them, Clarith explained that they often prepared rooms for travelers and would let them stay for free. Happily sitting on the bed, Germaine remarked to Yukina that she seemed to be lucky.
She then jumped off the bed and explained how she never had the time for a steady shelter or meals during the Witch Hunt and wasn't yet used to settling down at home. When Yukina asked if she could speak with Clarith alone, Germaine abided, noting they hadn't seen each other in a while, and left for the guest room next door. Later, the swordswoman began feeling hungry and decided to ask when dinner would be ready.
Once she returned next door to check on them, Clarith opened the door in a rush to leave. Noting the perfect timing, Germaine explained her hunger before noticing the blonde nun with her. She then asked Yukina if she was another acquaintance of hers. Faced with silence, the swordswoman stared at the nun and, recognizing her resemblance to Allen, realized she was Princess Riliane. The two then stared at each other in tense silence for some time.
Germaine eventually asked the girl for her name. After the nun apprentice meekly said she was "Rin", the swordswoman pondered the name. Turning around, she quietly spit out that it was nice to meet her before returning to her room. She later joined Yukina for dinner and learned their meals hadn't been done. After waiting for thirty minutes while the other nuns and orphans enjoyed their meals, they ate and returned to their respective rooms for the evening.
Battle on the BeachEdit
- "I finally found you, Abyss I.R."
- ―Germaine to "Mikina"[src]
Two days later, Germaine encountered the masked Mikina along the coastline during the night and confronted Abyss I.R. at swordpoint. The two then silently stared at each other until Germaine declared she finally found the mage. The sorceress inquired if Elluka sent her to Lucifenia as insurance while she and Gumillia searched Marlon, cuting it was a safe judgment. The swordswomen interjected about Gumillia's search in Levianta and then asked why she hadn't already left the region.
Once Irina answered that she was still looking for something, Germaine assessed that her objective was to collect a vessel of sin. Afterward, the two noticed Yukina, shocking the swordswoman. Seeing Abyss pretend to be Mikina and approach the girl, Germaine stepped in front of the writer and asserted she wasn't actually her mother and not to be fooled. When Yukina demanded to know why Abyss was still alive, Germaine stated that the mage's soul wasn't in Elluka's body to begin with, relating what Elluka had shared with her.
The swordswoman then asked Abyss where her red cat was. When the mage admitted she had hidden the body, Germaine retorted that it was unfortunate for her that she'd find it right away. Invoking Gumillia's inscription rune, Germaine saw the magic line lead to a nearby shed on the beach. Surprised at its close proximity, Germaine asked if she couldn't control others' bodies from too far and darted after the shed. After she reached the shack and kicked down the shore, the swordswoman jumped at the cat leaping from inside and fleeing to Mikina's shoulder.
When Abyss I.R. mocked Yukina's demands to release her mother and laughed, Germaine raised her sword toward the cat and interrupted that her talk was bravado, pointing out that Mikina's body wasn't that of a mage of soldier, just an ordinary human being. After Abyss admitted to the fact, she pulled out a small spoon and Germaine immediately identified it as a vessel of sin. Afterward, the sorceress applauded her sharp instincts before noting how fast she healed since their last battle. Germaine then impulsively explained her healing was due to all the meals she ate and Abyss deduced that she might be a relative of Banica Conchita.
Afterward, Germaine watched as Abyss teased about Yukina's apparent ignorance about her mother before seeing Mikina briefly regain control to stop the mage from revealing the truth. When Abyss began forcing Mikina to confess everything to her daughter, Germaine exclaimed to Yukina that she didn't need to hear it and attempted to attack the cat. Blown away by the blast conjured from the spoon Mikina held, the injured Germaine barely managed to stagger to her feet.
She then heard Mikina confess how she made a contract with the Demon of Greed and ended up collaborating with Prim and Abyss I.R. in their schemes. After the aristocrat revealed her possession allowed her to freely use the vessels of sin even without magic, Abyss regained control and attacked Yukina with the spoon. While Rin snuck up on the mage and interrupted her flame spell, Germaine took the opportunity to slowly approach her. When Abyss I.R. was again distracted by the Glass of Conchita's interference, Germaine declared it was over for her.
Swiping at her true form on Mikina's shoulder, the feline leapt off and dodged the attack, lightly scratching Germaine's neck with her claws as she passed. As the cat mage sprinted towards the port town, Germaine was suddenly supported by the spirit of Allen, sarcastically noting that his sister seemed to be standing. The swordswomen then retorted that she'd know even without him telling her, screaming to her "stupid brother" as she threw her rapier and successfully skewered the fleeing Abyss.
After the cat collapsed in the sand, Germaine went over to the body and removed her sword. Examining the body, she noticed it was actually a stuffed toy. When Yukina asked if Abyss was truly dead, the perplexed Germaine picked up the "corpse" and revealed it wasn't even dead. Throwing it in front of the writer's face, she confirmed Yukina's own realization about the "cat".
Afterwards, Germaine traveled with Chartette to the east, feeling increasingly unlike herself since the beach battle. In EC 508, they arrived in Divine Levianta during the terrorist strikes caused by Neo Apocalypse. At some point, she encountered Riliane Mouchet and the two dueled; Germaine eventually lost. Later on, while chasing after Neo Apocalypse, the swordswoman encountered Abyss I.R. again and they battled. Abyss then took advantage of Germaine's neck injury from her previous battle with the sorceress and she was defeated. The sorceress then possessed her body.
An Unfamiliar WorldEdit
- "Lucifenia's become a really nice country... with just that, there's a sense I was alive. I don't have any more regrets."
- ―Germaine in her final months[src]
Abyss I.R. then used her body for over a century, eventually taking the name "Julia Abelard". During the Duel of Merrigod Plateau on January 30, EC 611, Julia relinquished control of Germaine's body and left the woman unconscious within Pale Noël's tomb. Later that day, she awoke in the cave, confused by her surroundings. The World Police then arrived and took Germaine into custody as the fugitive Julia. Detained at the police's detention center in Elphegort, the swordswoman told interrogators she was the hero of the revolution among other things, confusing them. As she rapidly aged, a doctor checked her health and discovered she had about two months to live.
The old woman was later visited by Justea officers Ayn Anchor and Willus Zorach in early February. When Ayn asked her name, Germaine told him who she was and Willus intervened to point out how over a century had passed since she was last active, questioning where she had been and what she was doing that whole time. Germaine admitted she didn't know, recounting her odd feeling after her battle with Abyss and sudden blanking out during her fight against Neo Apocalypse with Chartette before waking up in a cave and being arrested. Met with silence, Germaine thought about the time gap and murmured that the mage might've taken over her body and mind.
Shortly after, Germaine requested to be transferred to Lucifenia. After Ayn and Willus cleared her request, she was transferred to a prison in her homeland, with Ayn made her guard. The old woman later requested a temporary outing to see the city of Rolled and was granted permission, supervised by Ayn. Pushing the woman forward in a wheelchair through Rolled, Germaine carefully looked at everything that changed in the city in the past hundred years. Seeing a familiar street, she made a small smile and told the officer how tidy it had become, explaining that people used to just throw trash there before.
She then stated she wanted to see Milanais Square and Ayn nodded, heading toward the plaza. Passing through 1st Block, Germaine looked at the fancy estates until they reached the square. They then saw a crowd gathering around someone's beautiful singing. Enamored with the voice, she asked who was singing and Ayn stated it was the famous diva Rin Chan who had recently resumed her work in Lucifenia. When he inquired if he wanted to go see her, Germaine admitted she wasn't a fan of crowds and declined.
Moving again, she looked up at the sunny sky and happily remarked about how nice a country Lucifenia had become. Relating that that fact alone gave a sense she had been alive, Germaine admitted she didn't have any regrets left. The old woman was later returned to the detention facility. Living out her final months in prison, Germaine breathed her last breath in March of that year.
- "You... You insolent woman! You shall be beheaded! Put her to the guillotine!"
"Ohhhhh? Try it. I already died a long time ago; I'm not scared of something like that!"
- ―Riliane and Germaine[src]
Following her death, Germaine was sent to the Heavenly Yard and remained there. In EC 998, she and the other souls were pulled back to the Third Period as the ground world merged with the Hellish Yard. Afterward, she returned to her role as the revolutionary hero, dressing in her famed red armor, and attended Princess Riliane's dinner party in the Hall of Mirrors.
During the festivities, Germaine watched as Riliane's giant cake was brought out before the princess leaped out of the dessert and commanded everyone there to kneel to her. Furious, Germaine screamed for her to not ruin the food as she approached, bopping her on the head with her armored fist. When Riliane complained, Germaine answered it was her punishment for being a naughty child.
After the princess ordered her to be put on the guillotine, Germaine goaded her to try it and scoffed that she wasn't scared since she already died long ago. Riliane then said she'd have Elluka turn her into a pig and called out for the mage. When the sorceress didn't appear, Germaine noted she didn't seem to be getting anywhere with the mage. She then teasingly questioned what the princess was going to do while pushing her toward the exit of the Hall of Mirrors.
Riliane then ran off in the other direction and Germaine hastily pursued her before seeing Allen running after the princess as well. Shocked, Germaine called for Allen to wait when someone grabbed her shoulder and held her back. Looking back to see Leonhart, Germaine fervently questioned what her father was doing before crying out again for Allen to wait as he ran out of the hall.
Historically, Germaine was known as the hero of the Lucifenian Revolution who succeeded in overthrowing The Daughter of Evil. Her actions were later detailed by Yukina in her novel titled "The Daughter of Evil", telling the true events that occurred and becoming very popular centuries later. In the succeeding centuries, rumors spread about the mysterious leader of Père Noël, Julia Abelard, including that she had been a reincarnation of Germaine and that Germaine had become immortal.
Personality and TraitsEdit
- "I feel that the heroine Germaine Avadonia isn't the type of person to hurt others, just for achieving her goals."
"You really don't know anything, regardless of whether it's about me or everything else."
- ―Yukina and Germaine[src]
Germaine was a brave and strong-willed swordswoman, led by her own moral compass and a strong sense of justice imparted by her father. From a young age, Germaine would never back down from a challenge no matter the danger if the cause was a worthy one, and refused to be swayed by the pessimistic opinions of adults or her peers. As an adult, she similarly refused to be stopped by any obstacle in leading the Lucifenian Revolution against Princess Riliane. Despite this, while she never backed down from an enemy out of cowardice, she nevertheless knew when to pick her battles and acted with reserve when necessary. As such, she was able to calmly leave things that were beyond her understanding to those more equipped to deal with them, such as the Demons of Sin.
As part of this, Germaine was often brash and considered unfeminine, easily getting into fights and breaking social codes of etiquette. Although wearing a dress for her father's sake, Germaine gave little regard for her physical appearance or for how she acted around others, even having no qualms jumping through windows to make a quick exit. She also followed after Leonhart in his alcoholism, enjoying wine and often getting drunk in public; following her brother's death, Germaine began drinking for a time to drown out her depression from the event and still enjoyed wine to excess afterwards. As part of this excess Germaine, like her ancestor, enjoyed eating lots of meals.
Germaine had an especially close relationship with her father and brother. Adopting many of her values and learning swordsmanship from Leonhart, Germaine was very close with him and thought of him as her own flesh and blood. Even after her father's death, she often looked to his memory for guidance and felt he continued to aid her, even if retroactively. After losing both her father and brother, Germaine became disconsolate and missed them bitterly as well as experiencing guilt for her role in Allen's death, this being the cause of her new attitudes about revenge and preferred struggle for world peace.
The swordswoman's bravery also made her argumentative and stubborn. As a child Germaine had trouble getting along with the sullen Allen; although eventually she came to love and respect Allen, sharing a very close relationship, it nonetheless turned caustic on occasion when she disagreed with his actions or beliefs. In addition, while she loved her father and often shared his interests, she would persistently argue against his decisions when she disagreed with them, such as taking Allen back to the palace. She similarly became defensive about her own actions and beliefs, and especially quarreled with those who questioned her reasons for leading the Revolution.
Similarly, Germaine had a strong sense of justice and refused to let a wrong go unpunished or unamended, routinely brawling with thugs or those taking advantage of the weak; due to this, she grew to despise Riliane for her abuse of the people. Early in life, this manifested in an overwhelming sense of vengeance whenever Germaine or those she cared about were wronged. Enraged over her father's assassination, Germaine tirelessly worked to dethrone princess Riliane and convinced herself it was for the good of the people rather than her own desires; she similarly was fueled by vengeance for her fallen comrades when defeating Gast.
As time passed, following the losses she suffered in the Revolution, Germaine came to understand the difference between justice and vengeance and that the latter ultimately gave only emptiness. Adopting a less hot-blooded demeanor and suffering guilt for the innocent lives lost in pursuit of her revenge, she denounced revenge as a justification for hurting others. In recognition of the emptiness of her past goals, she also argued against anyone else fighting in retribution and instead advocated working towards a more ideal future.
As well as this, following the Revolution she even refused to fight for any cause other than securing peace and protecting others. Germaine also disapproved of killing someone unable to defend themselves, and would fight diligently to defend the weak; as an extension she disapproved of Marlon's imperialism and worked to secure Lucifenia's independence.
Skills and AbilitiesEdit
- "Ah, you're Leonhart's daughter. Haha, now I can't complain why I lost."
- ―Gast Venom[src]
Germaine grew up to be strong and skilled with a rapier under the tutelage of Leonhart Avadonia. As a swordswoman, she was able to effectively battle several opponents at a time and take advantage of an enemy's habits in combat to turn against them, as well as able to dodge and defend against even the quickest attacks. Even while blinded, Germaine was able to listen closely to another's movements and act accordingly. As a brawler as well, she was able to take on more than one enemy and win without a scratch. With her father's advice and her own experience as a soldier, Germaine was also a skilled tactician and leader; as a result, her aid in battle almost assured the success of her side.
In addition, Germaine's skill as a warrior was boosted by her higher than average regenerative abilities as a result of being a descendant of Banica Conchita, being able to heal from injuries at a much faster rate than an average human as well as having a high endurance. Similarly, her higher metabolic rate gave her a huge appetite and she ate many meals; Germaine also demonstrated a high resistance for alcohol and was able to drink twenty shots and still stand, although after Leonhart's death her resilience waned to only ten shots. Despite this endurance, Germaine handled water poorly and would easily become seasick.
In part because of her strength, Germaine was a charismatic individual and, with her compatriots, able to influence public sentiment to her favor and lead armies in her cause. Taking advantage of the growing disapproval of Princess Riliane, she was able to rally the citizens of Lucifenia to revolt and similarly was able to rouse a crowd to begin the Revolution quickly. Although not always accepting them, Germaine's skill as a leader had her offered several commanding positions and, due to her status as the Hero of the Lucifenian Revolution, she could quickly inspire loyalty in her troops.
Leonhart Avadonia: Germaine's adopted father. Despite their occasional quarrels Germaine loved her father very much, sharing his love of wine and headstrong nature, and even when little the girl was willing to fight to protect him. She became overcome with grief and rage at his death; even after making peace with it, Germaine continued to miss her father. She often made silent remarks directed at him and looked to his memory for guidance.
Allen Avadonia: Germaine's adopted brother. Germaine stated that Allen was often sarcastic and unlikable, but the two had become very close after their rescue of Chartette. Germaine was impressed with Allen's swordsmanship, and sense of justice, affectionately referring to him as her "righteous brother," and often was concerned for his well being. While horrified to learn of his role in her father's death, Germaine missed Allen bitterly after his execution.
Chartette Langley: Germaine's childhood friend. Germaine was flattered by Chartette's treating her as a big sister, despite her older age, and enjoyed spending time with her. While trusting Chartette’s credibility as an informant, Germaine was constantly concerned for her safety, dating back from childhood; after seeing her take part in the revolution, she gained new respect for her fighting abilities.
Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche: Germaine's target of revenge. Germaine was disgusted by Riliane's abuse of power, growing to hate her after the princess had Leonhart assassinated. This hatred was her main motivation in starting the Lucifenian Revolution. After Allen’s death and several years had passed, Germaine became disillusioned with vengeance and eventually forgave Riliane.
Kyle Marlon: A source of support for the resistance. Germaine, while amused by Kyle's altered behavior in his "Karchess" persona, appreciated his motivations of revenge for joining the Lucifenian Resistance. She bore him no ill will for the annexation of Lucifenia, although became concerned for him once he became influenced by the Demon of Pride during his rule; understanding his pain, she tried to persuade him to give up his goal of revenge.
York Le Corbusier: A fellow member of the resistance. Germaine often spent time with York and trusted him as her second-in-command during the Lucifenian Revolution. While often taking part in his battles, she also provided a voice of reason to his quick temper, stopping him from rash action.
Gumillia: Germaine's employer. Germaine saw Gumillia as a viable source of income and agreed with her goals for continuing the greater good.
Yukina Freezis: A friend of Germaine's. Over the course of their acquaintance Germaine and Yukina became very close, with Germaine taking a protective role over the girl and later spending time with her after her employment to Gumillia had ended.
Abyss I.R.: Germaine's opponent. Germaine, particularly after allying with Elluka and Gumillia, saw Abyss I.R. as only an enemy and an evil woman. She thus treated her coldly and wished to protect others from her cruelty, quick to attack when the opportunity arose. Despite this, she was eventually caught off guard by her and her body taken over by the mage.
Conceptualization and OriginEdit
- Her last name, Avadonia, seems to be a corruption of Abbadon.
- Her name is partially inspired by the name of her representative Vocaloid, MEIKO, with Germaine's romanization containing "mei".
- Her original surname, Beelzenia, is a reference to Beelzebub, the patron demon of Gluttony.
- Ironically, she would question if she was the reincarnation of the legendary Vampiress Vanika Conchita due to her zeal for drinking wine.
- Her exceptional beauty as noted by her foster father is alluded to in Fifth Pierrot, where the possessed Germaine, First Santa Claus, is listed as the "sexy hottie".
- She shares the same birthday (November 5th) with her Vocaloid.
- Due to her lineage to Duke Venomania, Germaine had the potential to develop Hereditary Evil Raiser Syndrome and pass it onto future generations.
- Originally, the origin of Germaine's birth and how she was adopted by Leonhart was planned to be included in The Daughter of Evil: Praeludium of Red but was cut for convenience.
- In Epic of Evil: The Daughter of Evil Fanbook, Germaine was voted as the seventh most popular character in The Daughter of Evil series by Japanese fans.
