The Four Mirrors of Lucifenia[note 1] was one of the Vessels of Sin, inhabited by the Demon of Pride. Princess Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche was among its most prominent owners, infamous for causing the Reign of Evil.

History[]

Creation[]

When Hänsel and Gretel created the Vessels of Sin in EC 014,[1] a yellow mirror was used as the vessel for the Demon of Pride. Afterward, the twins released the vessels into the world.[2] The mirror was later collected around the EC 480s by Queen Prim Marlon. Afterwards, Abyss I.R. took the vessel and split it into four smaller hand mirrors.[3] At some point, Prim gifted one of the mirrors to her son, Kyle.[4]

The twins find the mirror

In EC 491, Abyss I.R. transplanted the Demon of Gluttony to one of the mirrors. Around that time, Ney Phutapie was given another mirror from her mother, Prim. After showing the mirror to Minister Presi at the Lucifenian Royal Palace, the sorceress placed the mirror in a box and buried it on the nearby beach. After Prince Alexiel and Princess Riliane found the mirror, Abyss conjured the Demon of Gluttony from the mirror to possess one of them.

Presi later used the mirror to transfer the Demon of Gluttony's possession of Riliane to himself in order to defeat Elluka Clockworker. After Presi was defeated and killed, Elluka sealed the demon inside the mirror. Abyss I.R. later recalled the Demon of Gluttony to its original vessel. Around that time, Ney infiltrated the royal palace with the mirror in her possession.

Following the death of Queen Anne in EC 499, Ney gave the mirror to Riliane and transplanted the Demon of Pride to the Princess.[5] Possessed by the demon, Riliane's arrogance increased and crushed her potential doubts, making her a cruel tyrant. After King Kyle withdrew his marriage proposal to Riliane in favor of Michaela in EC 500,[6] Riliane ordered the invasion of Elphegort and the genocide of its female population, slaughtering countless.[7]

Following the Lucifenian Revolution, the Demon of Pride left the deposed princess and returned to its vessel. Abyss I.R. then extracted the Demon of Lust from Kyle and placed it in the mirror Prim carried. Afterward, Prim had the Demon of Pride possess Kyle through the mirror he carried.[3] With Kyle's doubts about his actions crushed,[4] he quickly annexed Lucifenia as part of the Kingdom of Marlon.[8]

Changing Hands[]

After Elluka and Gumillia's failed attempt to steal Kyle's mirror in EC 501, Kyle began keeping it on his person at all times.[9] In EC 505, the Marlon King declared war on Asmodean and Beelzenia.[10] Kyle's mirror was later stolen by Gumillia and Yukina Freezis. Shortly after, the king took the mirror back during their escape and completely submitted to the Demon of Pride, undergoing a demonic transformation and attacking them before flying into the night's sky.[9]

Over the course of two weeks, the possessed and transformed Kyle tracked the three down to the Millennium Tree Forest. After Kyle was defeated in battle, both mirrors were successfully sealed by Gumillia.[11] Prim later brought the last mirror with her to Castle Hedgehog. During the battle with King Kyle's armies, Prim kept the vessel with her in Heartbeat Clocktower.

She later attempted to have the demon in the mirror repossess Kyle before being killed by Ney. Afterward, Kyle brought the final mirror to Lioness Castle and it was subsequently sealed by Elluka and Gumillia. Soon after, Abyss I.R. took the glass along with the other vessels of sin assembled at the castle and removed their seals.[3] Afterward, the Demon of Lust returned to its original vessel.

At some point, all four mirrors ended up in Jakoku and were collected by Rin Miroku in EC 842; the girl then contracted with the Demon of Pride before being killed by Kayo Sudou later that year. The mirrors were then lost soon after.[12]

Dark Star Scandal[]

At some point, one of the mirrors ended up in Maistia.[13] Another one of the mirrors eventually came into the possession of Eater Sabella, and was stored at the Graveyard restaurant. Said mirror was later confiscated as evidence by the Dark Star Bureau during the shutdown of the Graveyard restaurant. Collected by Gallerian Marlon,[14] the vessel was stored in the judge's home.[15]

The judge later collected another mirror and stored it in his home along with the other.[16] At some point, Gallerian also obtained the mirror in Maistia at an auction.[13] Once all four mirrors were collected by the judge, they were chained together.[17] After Gallerian's home was burned down in EC 983, Ma collected the vessels from the charred remains and stored them in Evil's Theater.[18]

World's End[]

After the destruction of the Third Period in EC 999, Michaela summoned all seven vessels together for Allen Avadonia.[19] The Demon of Pride later gathered with the other demons in Marlon, staying there with Michaela.[20]

Mechanics[]

Similar to the other vessels of sin, the Four Mirrors served as containers for the Demon of Pride's essence and allowed the demon to influence or possess its owner.[4] From the mirrors, the demon was able to fuel the owner's vanity and selfishness, turning their doubt into confidence and then hubris.[9] As the demon was the source of the Four Mirrors' powers, sealing the vessel subsequently sealed the demon and left the object powerless.[21]

As a single vessel composed of four pieces, the Demon of Pride was able to freely travel between each mirror, allowing it to affect multiple individuals over great distances; additionally, all four Mirrors had to be sealed in order to suppress the demon. Like the other vessels, an empty Mirror could be inhabited by another demon, although a skilled individual must purposefully move them.[5] Like all the vessels of sin, the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia were able to kill a demon contractor through the Demon of Pride's power.

Trivia[]

Conceptualization and Origin[]

  • The vessel's representative sin is derived from Pride of the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Pride's original form, the stone, is depicted as a jewel or precious stone; jewels often symbolize royalty, obstinacy, and vanity.
  • The name of its vessel, the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia, is a reference to Lucifer, the patron demon of pride; the state of Lucifenia also derives its name from the demon.
  • In Greek mythology, Narcissus falls in love with his own reflection in a pool of water; the myth is the origin of word "narcissism", describing someone who is vain, selfish, or prideful.
  • The mirrors may be a reference Riliane and Allen's representative Vocaloids, Rin and Len; their surname, "Kagamine", translates to "mirror sound".
