For the being he fused with, see Adam.

"But that wish is mine and Eve’s. Once all are assembled, Eve and I will have a second advent. We will recreate this broken-down world. And then we will enjoy eternal happiness in our true Utopia."
―Adam[src]

Adam Moonlit, publicly Adam Solntse, was a scientist of the Magic Kingdom Levianta and the first director of Project 'Ma'. Manipulating Eve Zvezda and met with her failure, Adam fell in love with her and the two fled to Held's Forest in Elphegort, marrying there. Adopting the twins Hänsel and Gretel after Eve murdered their mother, Adam was killed by the twins years after, ending up inside Grim the End and leeching off the Demon of Wrath.

History

Early Life

"After this you will become the mother of gods, 'Mem Aleph'."
―Adam to Eve[src]

Adam, along with his sister Eve, was born in Magic Kingdom Levianta in the BT 20s, the son of Queen Maria Moonlit. Despite Maria Moonlit's protests that the babies were a virgin conception, the Leviantan senator Miroku Loop Octopus hid the twins' birth and had the infants thrown into the river to prevent a potential scandal. Miraculously, Adam was rescued by a former forest spirit named Catherine who, being in the shape of a whale, carried him to the coast in her mouth. The baby, along with a message in a bottle with his name "Adam Moonlit", was later found by a fisherman,[1] and the boy spent the next five years growing up in an orphanage.[2]

One night, Adam's home was destroyed by a tsunami. Despite this, the young child managed to survive and lived alone on the coast. He was occasionally visited by the whale Catherine, and came to see her as his mother, while other humans who visited the coast treated the boy with hostility. One day Adam was approached by the head of the Levianta Royal Institute, Horus Solntse, who claimed to be there to adopt him on his real mother's orders. Though Catherine protested this claim and tried to stop Adam from leaving, Horus convinced the boy she was an evil forest spirit and Adam angrily left his former mother figure behind.

Once in Horus' care, rather than be reunited with his mother Adam was brought to live in the royal institute's research facility and stayed confined in its walls, forbidden to leave except when sent shopping. With Horus continually telling him that he needed to study more and work harder in order to meet his mother, Adam grew up well educated but severely emotionally deprived. Although Adam was eventually adopted as Horus' son, he continued to ask him about his mother, only to be denied.[1]

To Fill His Emptiness

As Horus' health declined, he began employing various apprentices whom Adam began to work with as well, having by now become a skilled scientist. When Horus neared his death, he finally explained to Adam that his mother was Maria Moonlit. He claimed that Maria had been forced to give Adam up and became a puppet of Miroku thanks to the brainwashing drug Venom, Horus claiming that his "apprentice" Seth Twiright created it. Before departing to die alone, Horus had Adam agree to become the new head of the institute, and gave him a list of his allies who wished to help overthrow Miroku.

As head of the institute, Adam was left in charge of the ongoing "Next Queen Project" which had been started to artificially produce the next queen of Levianta, and the project lagged without Horus' guidance. One day, Adam received a visit from one of Horus' collaborators, Miroku's older son Gammon, and quickly used his knowledge from Horus to form a tentative alliance with him. One night, Adam conversed with Gammon at a bar about his family's prophetic dream ability and the current corrupt state of the Leviantan government. During their conversation, Adam was approached by Seth Twiright, who came to help with the Next Queen Project.

Adam arrives at the Senate meeting

After Adam reluctantly allowed Seth to join the institute, the latter introduced the "God Seed", a living liquid alleged to be derived from Levia-Behemo, with which the institute could artificially create powerful magic users. During their meeting, Adam confronted Seth on his role in creating Venom; he learned that Seth had devised the recipe after being commissioned for it, but allegedly hadn't used it himself. In the wake of Alice Merry-Go-Round's prophecy and the Next Queen Project being re-purposed into Project 'Ma', Adam resolved to use the project to get revenge on Miroku for robbing him of a normal life with his mother, as well as to overthrow the current government and put himself in power.[1]

With Project 'Ma' underway, Adam put his own genetic material into the God Seed so that the children born of the selected 'Ma' would be biologically related to him. He additionally met with Gammon and revealed that he was Maria Moonlit's son, detailing his plan to marry the project candidate and reestablish the monarchical line in Levianta as a hereditary one with the Project 'Ma' children as his heirs. Once Gammon agreed to help, Adam used Gammon's contacts to get the recipe for Venom and to obtain Miroku's journal, through which he learned that Seth was the retainer that had thrown him in the river long ago, and began plotting to get him out of the way.

Project 'Ma'

As part of 'Project Ma', the institute conducted a series of "Witch Hunts" to quickly acquire candidates. Despite Gammon's objections, Adam decided to pursue the infamous Apocalypse member Meta Salmhofer as a candidate, plotting for Seth to be killed during the excursion to Merrigod Plateau. The plan backfired, however, leading to every researcher being killed except for Seth.[1] Meta was later discarded as a potential candidate. Afterwards, Adam and Seth, along with Gammon's contingent of soldiers, ventured to Held's Forest to seek another potential candidate, the alleged Witch of the Forest who used her great magical power to protect the local inhabitants.

As they traveled, the researchers' entourage was attacked by Raisa Netsuma's army. While the soldiers continued the fight, Adam and Seth were rescued by Eve Zvezda and brought back to her village, Nemu, and to her father Raiou Zvezda. Adam and Seth soon explained their purpose in coming and their suspicion that Eve herself was the Witch of the Forest they sought. When Seth eventually tested Eve, they found her level to be too low, in truth due to interference from Eve's spoon. Once Seth then departed to receive medical treatment from a proper hospital, Adam and Gammon remained to continue their search, with Eve taking them to several villages nearby, to no avail.

As they prepared to head back, Adam began chatting with Eve before the two were interrupted by another attack from Raisa and her army, with Eve unleashing her power to defeat them. Upon returning to Nemu, Adam and Eve found all the village women, and Raiou, slaughtered by Meta's forces, while the village men were brainwashed into becoming more of her Red Devotees. After a tense confrontation with Meta, reinforcements arrived from the capital and the Apocalypse members withdrew. With Eve revealed to be the Witch of the Forest, and her home being destroyed, Adam took her with him on his return to the capital to submit her as a project candidate. He also, as part of his plan, began slipping Eve Venom mixed with coffee,[1] unaware that Venom had no effect on her.[3]

After taking Eve back to the research institute, Adam had her magic potential properly quantified; With Eve's magical power recorded as more than high enough for the project, Adam prepared her for a ritual to get the current queen to accept her as her successor, downplaying the high risk the ritual involved to ensure Eve's cooperation. During the days they spent together, Adam struck up a relationship with Eve as he tutored her in the history of Levianta and its politics and helped her get settled in the capital.

Before a month had passed, Adam managed to make himself Eve's boyfriend, though the two kept their relationship secret to avoid complications. As part of this, he promised Eve they would be married in secret after she became queen, the two deciding to do it in Held's Forest.[2] As Adam continued to play the part of a perfect boyfriend, he spent one night drinking with Gammon and complained about how stressful he found it. The two also further discussed their plans for overthrowing the government once Eve became queen.

Once Eve finally took part in the ritual Adam awaited her return, becoming worried after learning that another candidate, Zellana, had been killed during the test. Eve returned to the institute unharmed, however, although she remembered little of what happened, and Adam successfully impregnated her with the God Seed. Over the next several months, Adam and Gammon made the preparations for their coup and Adam had his connections look for Seth, who had vanished after Eve's pregnancy. On one occasion, Adam took Eve out of the institute and the two visited the coast where Adam spent some of his childhood; while there, he was able to reunite and reconcile with Catherine, who had become part of the ocean.

Once Eve went into labor, Adam rushed to see her in Alicegrad, though was prevented from coming in during the birthing. Once allowed inside, Adam rushed in to find that Eve's children were stillborn and the project was a failure, and that furthermore Eve was in complete denial of it. Enraged, Adam confronted Seth, only for the latter to tell him that it was Adam, himself, who was to blame for the stillbirth. Afterwards, it was confirmed that Eve was infertile and she had gone insane from the shock.

Crushed with guilt, Adam went drinking again and ruminated on what he had done,[1] having realized that he truly did love Eve.[4] Gammon soon arrived to discuss how they would need to start their plans over again, only for Adam to decide that he was giving up his quest for revenge. In order to prevent Gammon from killing him as a loose end, Adam took Eve out of Levianta altogether and the two fled to Held's Forest.[1]

Life in the Forest

"Listen, our children are already not in this world. Return these children to their true mother's side."
―Adam after seeing his wife's crime[src]

Adam stares in horror at Eve's stolen children

After Adam fled to Elphegort with Eve, the two had a wedding in Held's Forest and made a small home in the forest, furnishing it with some of their belongings from Levianta, like Eve's spoon, a red wine glass, and a sword. The two took up work as woodcutters, with Adam traveling to other villages in the forest to sell their goods while avoiding the public eye in towns like Aceid.[5] When he would go out, he would use the alias "Cain Daybreak" to keep his true identity a secret. [6]

In EC 001,[7] Adam saw Eve return home one night and came to greet her, but was horrified to see that she held two stolen infants in her arms, a boy and a girl. Venturing outside, Adam found the corpse of the infants' mother and confirmed it was Meta Salmhofer, as well as finding bottles for the children labeled "Hänsel" and "Gretel". He then gave Meta's body a proper burial behind the house. When Adam returned inside, he found Eve smiling happily as she held the children, seemingly convinced they were hers. Fearing her being arrested, Adam decided to hide the crime and raise the children together with Eve as their own.[5]

Over the years, Adam raised the twins alongside his wife, while using his skills as a scientist to help Eve recover mentally[6]. He also tried teaching Hänsel but failed to get the boy to understand his studies.[6] Following the Levianta Catastrophe of EC 013, the effects of the disaster spread to Elphegort, causing a famine.[7] Because of this, Adam resorted to hunting animals within the forest as a source of food, though returned with less and less every time. In the following year,[8] Adam and Eve reluctantly agreed to abandon their foster children in the forest to starve to death so that they could survive the famine.

With a gloomy expression, Adam and his wife led their foster children deep into the forest before abandoning them and returning to their home.[9] Devastated by the event, Adam comforted Eve in their home before deciding to go out and attempt to hunt once more. When he returned, he discovered that the twins had managed to find their way home. [6] Immediately after this, he fended off Hänsel's attempt to attack him, before being stabbed in the back by an elderly Seth; questioning if this was karma for his actions, he then died.[6]

Demon of Wrath

"Without that, you can't lend her any power. Inconvenient, isn't it? You are after all more akin to a parasitic roundworm leeching off the vessel."
―Seth to Adam[src]

After his body's death, Adam Moonlit's soul joined Seth in the golden key, Grim the End. Seth, as the Demon of Wrath, allowed his former colleague to leech off his vessel and power. As time progressed, Seth also allowed Adam to act in his place making contracts.[10] In EC 136, Count Karchess Crim forged a contract with the demon through Adam to kill Duke Sateriasis Venomania. They later watched as Karchess transformed the key into a knife and stabbed the duke possessed by the Demon of Lust in the chest, killing him.[11]

In EC 505, the Demon of Wrath possessed Clarith through Adam. When the nun found Rin on the beach putting a message in a bottle out to sea, Adam read the woman's memories and impersonated her beloved Michaela. With Michaela's voice, he began urging Clarith to kill Rin, even lamenting about "her" painful death by a knife as Clarith prepared to murder Rin the same way. Before Clarith could follow through on Adam's orders, however Allen Avadonia intervened and blocked Clarith's way. Soon after, Clarith realized that Adam wasn't Michaela after all, and she gave up on taking revenge on Rin.[12]

During the Duel of Merrigod Plateau on January 30, EC 611, Adam watched the battle between Elluka Clockworker and Gumillia against Julia Abelard and Lemy Abelard. Unable to contract with Gumillia, he could only watch the duel silently for the next two hours until Seth began complaining about the stalemate. When he asked Adam why he wasn't making a move on Gumillia, Adam reminded him that a host needed anger and hate for him to lend them power. He listened as Seth decided that it was then his turn to act as the Demon of Wrath, watching while Seth tried and failed to convince Gumillia to make a contract.

Eventually, however, Seth goaded Gumillia into a temporary contract and killed Lemy with Grim the End, returning to Adam to relate the experience. Once Adam learned that the Demon of Gluttony had taken the dead Lemy's soul into the Glass of Conchita, Adam made clear to Seth his unhappiness with the situation. He listened as Seth continued to muse about the consequences of the duel, before Gumillia spoke to him again and Seth revealed his human identity to her.[10]

When Irina activated her heart's Black Box Type S, Gumillia was caught in the blast and transported into Levia's inner psychological world, leaving Grim the End and Adam behind.[13] Once the Demon of Gluttony opened a portal into the mental world and clashed her Worldeater with Levia and Irina's magic, the blast blew Adam and Seth out of the golden key.[14]

A New Vessel

Following the outcome of the duel, Adam's spirit ended up inside the Marlon Spoon.[15] During the EC 900s, the spoon fell into the possession of Mata Corpa before it was stolen by Ma.[16] After Ma was tried, the spoon was put inside the Dark Star Bureau's evidence lockup, but Ma stole it again in EC 978.[17] While the spoon was in her possession, Ma told Adam that the Clockworker's Doll contained his beloved Eve. Once he was brought to the mansion of Gallerian Marlon, Adam forged a contract with the judge in order to facilitate communication between Gallerian and Eve,[18] with Gallerian keeping the spoon on him at all times.[19]

Adam appears before Gallerian

During the Leviantan Civil War, Adam manifested in Gallerian's mansion while Gallerian wondered why none of the militia had come inside the mansion, surprising the judge. After arguing about his true identity, he confirmed to Gallerian that his contract with him allowed him to speak to "Michelle" inside the doll. Then as Gallerian lamented being unable to bring back Michelle's body, Adam taunted him over his failures and inability to collect all the vessels; in the process, he revealed that Eve was the one inside the doll, and not Michelle.

As Gallerian refused the notion, Adam continued to taunt the judge's beliefs about "Michelle" and the vessels of sin, as well as his own greed making up for Adam not being the real Demon of Greed. As Gallerian continued to argue, Adam decided to bring the Doll to them so she could affirm for herself if she was Eve or Michelle and summoned her to the room. The Doll, however, only expressed confusion at Adam's presence.

Soon after, she attacked Gallerian's enemies outside the mansion with a unique fire magic; realizing the doll couldn't be Eve as she didn't possess such an ability, Adam angrily asked who she was and the Doll told him that she was Gallerian's daughter. Realizing Ma had lied, Adam spitefully revealed to Gallerian that Ma and Bruno Zero had hidden something from him as well, and refused to reveal what it was before returning to the forest.[18]

Evil's Theater

"How long will we continue this farce? There is nothing beyond that."
―Gear[src]
Gear

Sometime after, Adam awakened as "Gear" and was assigned the task of watching over Evil's Theater and keeping Heartbeat Clocktower running or else the awakened Clockworker's Doll would die.[20] Treating her coldly due to her not being Eve, Adam was later gifted a Black Box by the Doll,[21] coming upon the realization that she was his mother Maria.[22] He then dutifully performed his task day by day, observing his fellow inhabitants the Master of the Graveyard and the Waiter going about their own work.[23]

Gear comments on the hopelessness of the search

In EC 990, when the clocktower's inner mechanisms became too deteriorated to function, Gear realized the Director Doll would soon die.[24] Desperate to fulfill his duty, he tore out his own heart and used it to connect himself to the tower,[25] siphoning the powers of the Marlon Spoon to keep the clock tower operational. As a result, the doll was healed and drained the spoon of its power,[26] leaving Gear as a shell of his vessel. After his sacrifice, Gear was unable to enter the main theater, confined to the clock tower he connected himself to.[27]

When Gammon Octo submitted a "motion" to review the script regarding his vision for the Director Doll's utopia, Gear attended the faux hearing but largely ignored the prophecy.[28] He later attended the "trial" meeting the Master of the Court held in EC 998 to search for the vessel of Wrath, becoming annoyed with the pointless search.[29] Following the destruction of the world in EC 999, Adam's soul fused with one of the twins birthed by the Master of the Court, producing Adam.[21]

Legacy

"Now, I wonder if the dying wish of Adam dwells in the spoon that became Gear? It's a touching effort that it came as a vessel fragment near the world's collapse in year 1000 but..."
―Gammon Octo[src]

Throughout the centuries following Adam's first death, Elluka Clockworker continued to notice the resemblance many male relatives of the Marlon Royal Family shared with Adam, eventually considering investigating the family to uncover a connection between them.[30] In EC 982, Adam and his wife's skeletal corpses were discovered while their long abandoned home was being demolished for the construction of Evil's Theater. Afterwards, a graveyard was constructed around the theater grounds.[31]

Arte, remembering her past incarnation's life, despised Josef Crim for his resemblance to Adam.[32] Similarly, Kyle Marlon was mistakenly referred to by the Demon of Gluttony as the era's "Soul of Adam".[33] While reviewing the court "motions" in Evil's Theater, Gammon Octo queried if Adam's dying wish resided within the Marlon Spoon and manifested as Gear after the vessel awakened; although considering the effort touching, he didn't believe it would help with the world's destruction.[34]

Personality and Traits

"But you failed. Before you could finish collecting them all–here you are in this sorry state. Why could you not notice sooner that your own sin would ruin you one of these days?"
―Adam talking down to Gallerian[src]

Adam was a cruelly manipulative, yet deeply troubled man. From a young age, Adam's clearest emotions were that of loneliness and anger at the world. As a young child, Adam held hostility towards adults as a result of his suffering and was even quick to turn against his former mother figure. His emotional issues only increased after being adopted by Horus Solntse, not even feeling like a human being with how he was treated. By the time he was an adult, Adam described himself as feeling empty inside and, outside of all his other goals, he desired to fill that emptiness at any cost even if it meant becoming "evil". To this end, Adam settled on trying to obtain revenge for being robbed of a normal life with a normal family, desiring to overthrow Miroku's corrupt governing more from his personal grievances than a desire for a just government.

Adam showed little empathy with others and manipulated people as he saw fit, similarly willing to dispose of anyone who got in his way or whom he deemed worthy of his revenge.[1] As part of this, he took advantage of Eve's vulnerable state, while initially thinking nothing of brainwashing her and lying to her to make her easier to manipulate.[2] This manipulative personality worsened after Adam's death as a human. Dedicating himself to the duties of the Demon of Wrath on Seth's behalf, Adam would use the anger and hate of others to kill the objects of their vengeance and was even willing to go so far as to impersonate or allow impersonation of a loved one to make them act as he desired.[10] He carried these manipulations out without visible remorse, at least in one instance taking pleasure in mocking Gallerian who had made a contract with him under mistaken assumptions.[18]

Adam's resolve to bear the weight of his and Eve's sins

Despite this, Adam's time with Eve gradually brought out other sides of him, and he came to care about her and her fate in spite of himself. These new feelings surprised Adam, and he initially denied them for the sake of his ambitions. When Project Ma failed, however, he was devastated by the psychological damage he'd caused Eve and admitted his concern for her.[1] By the end of Project Ma, Adam was wracked with guilt and dedicated himself to living a happy wedded life with Eve and helping her recover. Characterizing his guilt, Adam was also willing to cover for the crimes Eve committed in her delusion, deciding to bear her sins as his own when failing to fix what she'd done.[3] After his "death", however, Adam's love for Eve became obsessive as he sought to reunite with her again, considering them to be fated to attract each other and wanting to build a paradise together.[18]

As Gear, Adam acted stoic, calm, and observant, strongly contrasting with his own previous personality.[34] He also had a strong sense of duty, willing to make tremendous sacrifices for the sake of his mission. Because of this, he shared a certain devotion to the awakened Clockworker's Doll;[23] although initially resentful of her when he realized she wasn't Eve,[21] his loyalty to her was reignited when he realized the doll was the mother that had once been stolen from him.[22] Although normally reserved, he could be annoyed when provoked.[27]

Skills and Abilities

Adam was an excellent scientist, raised under Horus' tutelage and a prodigy in his field. He took part in studies of the Second Period's technology, while as the head of the research institute he also had a hand in the human experimentation of the Next Queen Project and the first Project 'Ma'. His capabilities extended to his ability to manipulate those around him, such as Gammon and Eve, using the resources and circumstances he had at hand. Despite this, Adam's knowledge was littered with blind spots, such as in regards to the legacy of the Second Period and the God Seed. He also, despite his manipulative nature, did not have the natural charisma of those like Seth, and so had difficulty being a charming boyfriend for Eve, professing it to be stressful.[1]

Outside of his scientific studies, Adam had a great amount of magical power, but was unable to perform spells due to receiving no training.[2] He nonetheless later demonstrated an ability to use the Swap Technique, allowing himself to transfer a nearby soul, including his own, to another nearby body or object at will.[35] After hundreds of years borrowing the power of the Demon of Wrath, he also demonstrated that he could conjure illusions.[18]

After joining Seth in Grim the End, Adam was able to borrow Seth's power in a way compared to a parasite, thus able to wield the powers of Grim the End, including possession, contracting with hosts, and communicating through telepathy; unlike Seth, however, he was unable to contract with a host if said host possessed no actual sense of wrath.[10] Aside from this, Adam was capable of impersonating an individual, appearing before his host in the being's guise.[12] He could also summon the vessels of sin to himself, countering the repel between them.[18] He was presented with the same weaknesses as the demon, able to be sealed inside Grim the End.[36]

Even after leaving Grim the End, Adam still retained the ability to make contracts, lending his potential host his power of telepathy.[18] Additionally, as Gear, Adam wielded all the powers of the Marlon Spoon. After transferring his magical power to the clocktower and the Master of the Court, he was assumed to be largely powerless.[27] His skill as a Leviantan scientist also appeared to translate to mechanical skill, able to monitor and keep the clocktower running for years.[37]

Character Connections

Eve Moonlit: Adam's wife and long-lost twin sister. Unaware of their sibling relationship, Adam initially just saw Eve as a means of gaining power over the Senate, but over time grew to care about her and found peace from their companionship together. He thus experienced guilt for using her after her miscarriage, and afterwards subserviently looked after her and took responsibility for her crimes as atonement for what he'd done. After death, Adam developed an obsession to find Eve again, believing they were fated to be together.

Catherine: Adam's mother figure. Though unaware she had rescued him as an infant, Adam came to see Catherine as a mother to him thanks to her watching over him for a time in his youth. Although temporarily persuaded to see her as evil, Adam became regretful of their parting and was happy to meet with her again on better terms.

Horus Solntse: Adam's adoptive father. Adam greatly resented his cruel upbringing at Horus' hands and as a result hated his adoptive father, coming to see Horus as having deceived him. Despite this, Adam also respected Horus and had no problem utilizing the resources that the latter provided him before his disappearance, succeeding him as the head of the institute.

Seth Twiright: A fellow scientist. Though unaware Horus was really Seth, Adam hated Seth due to the latter's role in his mother's disappearance; it was his goal to get revenge on him that motivated Adam to brainwash Eve. After running away to live in Elphegort, as well as his death by Seth's hands, Adam seemed to drop his desire for revenge and appeared able to tolerate cohabiting with the demon while in the Vessel of Wrath.

Maria Moonlit: Adam's mother. Although never knowing his mother, Adam was acutely affected by her absence and throughout his childhood longed to meet her. This led him to develop a desire for revenge against the Senate and Seth who took her away from him.

Gammon Loop Octopus: Adam's co-conspirator. Adam cooperated with Gammon as part of his plot to overthrow the government, but secretly planned to betray and kill him as a loose end. Despite this the two of them often went out drinking together, with Adam confiding in Gammon his frustrations while carrying out his plan.

Hänsel: Adam's foster son. Adam wished the best for Hänsel initially, urging Eve to take him back to his mother and deciding to raise him when it was explained this was impossible. As his father, he hoped to teach the boy just like he had been taught in the past, although hampered by Hänsel's low intelligence. He would also protect him from Eve's outbursts, though would occasionally yell at him when he caused trouble. While later becoming desperate enough to abandon the boy during the famine in Elphegort, Adam experienced great regret for doing so and was shocked when he returned.

Gretel: Adam's foster daughter. Adam wished the best for Gretel initially, urging Eve to take her back to her mother and deciding to raise her when it was explained this was impossible. He would often protect her from Eve's outbursts, though would occasionally yell at her when she caused trouble. While later becoming desperate enough to abandon the girl during the famine in Elphegort, Adam experienced great regret for doing so and was shocked when she returned.

Cain and Abel: Adam's children. While initially seeing Cain and Abel as means to gain leverage over the Senate, Adam was devastated by their death due to the effect it had on Eve. Adam later used the name Cain as his alias while living in Elphegort.

Gallerian Marlon: A man Adam made a contract with. Adam only saw Gallerian as a means for him to be together with Eve in the Doll, having no qualms with apparently deceiving him into thinking the Doll was his daughter. He additionally was contemptuous and mocking towards Gallerian in person.

Adam: A soul Adam Moonlit fused with. Their fusion allowed him to gain a will; he also retained some of Adam's original personality and memories.

Master of the Court: A fellow member of Evil's Theater. Although initially treating her coldly due to her not being Eve, after learning she was a reincarnation of his mother Adam became completely devoted to her as Gear, seeing her survival as his sole duty and becoming willing to sacrifice everything in order to save her. Despite this, he did not agree with her ultimate goal to unite the vessels of sin and was annoyed by the "trial" she held.

Trivia

Conceptualization and Origin

  • Adam Moonlit is inspired by Adam from Judeo-Christian mythology; like his biblical counterpart, Adam shares a relationship with his Eve counterpart and does not take direct part in the creation of the Original Sin.
  • Adam's name is derived from Hebrew for "from the ground", linking him to greed's representation as the "soil" as well as other characters portrayed by KAITO who are associated with greed.
  • Adam's alias Cain, written in Japanese, contains Kai (カイ), matching the characters in Adam's representative Vocaloid KAITO; Cain is also the name of his stillborn child with Eve.
  • Gear's name alludes to his role in maintaining Heartbeat Clocktower, keeping the gears turning to keep the awakened Clockworker's Doll alive and eventually powering the clock tower himself.

Curiosities

  • In the Original Sin Story: Complete Edition booklet, Adam's mother is mentioned to have sired a child allegedly of virgin birth before the skeptical Senate took away the baby and had the infant thrown into a river to hide the baby's existence.
  • Gammon, while organizing the "court cases" for the Master of the Court, speculates that Adam's dying wish possibly resided in the Marlon Spoon and manifested as Gear when the vessel awakened.[34]
  • In the Capriccio Farce PV, the Servants' cry to search for Grim the End is complemented with a small commentary, "That idiot's up above", explaining their reasoning for not searching there.
